Watch Will Ferrell Talk MLS Soccer As Ron Burgundy
Mugatu, Ricky Bobby, Chaz Reinhold, Frank the Tank; Will Ferrell has played some memorably ridiculous and hilarious characters over the years, but arguably his most iconic role is that of the Anchorman himself, Ron Burgundy. The clueless and confident San Diego broadcaster from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy delivers the news with a honeyed voice that is kind of a big deal. So naturally, people want to see Will Ferrell do a Ron Burgundy impression whenever he has a mike in front of his face, and he recently did just that before his Los Angeles FC Major League Soccer team had their debut game against the Seattle Sounders. Take a look.
Look at that, Ron Burgundy isn't some one-dimensional newscaster like Walter Cronkite; he is a true anchorman bringing knowledge, gravitas and the smell of rich mahogany to any subject, including ftbol. I can't imagine how often Will Ferrell gets asked to do this, but at least Max Bretos acknowledges that it is low-hanging fruit when he makes the request. While the actor is currently lacking the signature mustache and the untouchable hair, the delivery is still there. It's brilliant how quickly Will Ferrell falls not just into the voice, but into the character, spouting off quotable mispronunciations and hilarious untruths delivered with all the conviction of a man with a journalism school named after him. Perhaps if MLS matches did feature packs of wild coyotes, the beautiful game would receive the love and attention stateside that it enjoys everywhere else in the world.
If anyone is wondering why Will Ferrell was on the desk with the ESPN FC crew, he is more than a fan; he is actually part of the ownership group for the Los Angeles Football Club, along with other notable names Mia Hamm, Magic Johnson and Nomar Garciaparra. The match between the LA FC and the Seattle Sounders was actually the very first match for the new Los Angeles team, which shares a market and a stadium with the more tenured and decorated LA Galaxy. No doubt inspired by the support of news legend and scotch enthusiast Ron Burgundy, the Los Angeles Football Club opened their very first season with a 1-0 victory over their opponents in the away game.
While Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues didn't quite live up to the impossible standard of the original, it still fared better than most comedy sequels, and there is always the possibility that we see a third film to make a trilogy. In fact, director Adam McKay recently spoke about the possibility, saying that another film might take the character far from the pitch to a war zone as an embedded journalist. Next up, Will Ferrell will star in Holmes and Watson, a humorous take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic characters, which scheduled to hit theaters late this year.
