Dean Devlin Explains Why Those Stargate Movies May Be Dead

Dean Devlin Explains Why Those Stargate Movies May Be Dead

When the first Stargate movie was released in 1994, the original plan was for it to be the first installment of a film trilogy. Instead, the story continued in the TV series Stargate SG-1, which was followed by the spinoffs Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. In the past few years, though, there had been talk of bringing this mythology back to the big screen through a reboot, but recently it's seemed like these plans are no longer moving forward. The latest indication of this has been that producer Dean Devlin, who wrote the original Stargate movie with Roland Emmerich, is no longer attached to the franchise. As Devlin put it:

After Geostorm, I really came to the realization that I'm not the kind of guy who should ever work at studios. I excused myself from both Stargate and from Independence Day, so they may be going forward, but I don't know. I'm not involved anymore.

So whatever the future holds for all things Stargate, Dean Devlin made it clear during his visit to The Matthew Aaron Show that he will not be involved with it, nor will he be working on anything Independence Day-related, another property he co-created with Roland Emmerich. When it comes to reboots, normally they're spearheaded by fresh creative talent, so it's not unusual for the creator of the property or the individual(s) who oversaw the last iteration not to play a big role in the new version. Nevertheless, Devlin was an integral component to bringing Stargate to life, so it would be strange not to have him involved in any capacity. Evidently though, following his experience on Geostorm, which was his directorial debut, he's no longer interested in working with any major studios, so his time with the Stargate franchise has concluded.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard that plans for future Stargate movies have stalled. Roland Emmerich, who directed the original movie, said as much back in November 2016, noting that while it initially looked like "it was all firing at the same time," unforeseen complications put the kibosh on all that. So unless Emmerich and whoever else he's working with can somehow overcome whatever obstacles are in place for this reboot, I suspect we'll just have to remain content with the original Stargate movie, which made over $196 million worldwide. The TV side of the Stargate world has also been on indefinite hiatus since the cancellation of Stargate Universe in 2011. Earlier this year saw the release of the digital series Stargate Origins, which was a prequel to both the movie and SG-1, but otherwise, this franchise is very much still in a holding pattern.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for any major updates concerning the Stargate franchise. If you're interested in what movies are coming out soon unrelated to people traveling through space via alien-constructed portals, check out our 2018 release schedule.

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado's Director Doesn't Want To Make Sicario 3

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado's Director Doesn't Want To Make Sicario 3

The Sicario brand has become a full-fledged franchise with the debut of Stefano Sollima's Sicario: Day of the Soldado and the overall reaction to the intense sequel seems relatively positive. Sollima had the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Denis Villeneuve, but he has pulled it off by delivering a satisfying sequel that feels fresh and new. With all of that said, Sollima apparently isn't interested in coming back for a third Sicario movie, as he feels that these movies need different directors to bring different styles to each installment. In a recent interview, the director explained:

Every movie in these series needs to be a standalone that stays in the same world. I'd love to watch another chapter of 'Sicario,' but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style. You shouldn't have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise.

The Sicario world is not a series like Captain America or The Dark Knight series, in which filmmakers like The Russo brothers or Christopher Nolan put their own signature spins on the characters. As Stefano Sollima explained in his recent interview with Variety, the series should feel different from movie to movie as new filmmakers come in to direct off of the scripts written by Taylor Sheridan -- who is continuing a hot streak off of other films like Hell or High Water and Wind River.

This is something that other members of the Sicario universe have already championed in the development of Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Specifically, Josh Brolin opened up to CinemaBlend in an interview ahead of the film's release and noted that he wanted Day of the Soldado to feel like a different beast when compared to the movie that preceded it. Bringing Stefano Sollima into the equation played a major role in achieving that goal, and it sounds like Sollima himself wants that to continue by handing off the series to another filmmaker in its next installment.

Besides, it's also worth noting that Stefano Sollima has other work that he needs to focus on at the moment. In addition to his recent work on Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the director is also in the process of developing a film adaptation of the Call of Duty video game series. Working on Day of the Soldado almost certainly helped prepare the Italian filmmaker for that kind of endeavor, but now he wants to see what someone else can do with the franchise that he helped to continue.

For now, make sure to take a look at CinemaBlend's comprehensive review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado and check it out in theaters for yourself! Looking ahead to the rest of this year, you can also check out our full 2018 movie premiere guide to see what other movies are on the horizon for the coming months!

Why The Final Trailer Finally Got Me Excited For Dark Phoenix

Why The Final Trailer Finally Got Me Excited For Dark Phoenix

I have to be honest: Up until now, I havent been sold on Dark Phoenix as a theatrical experience. None of the trailers for this next and last in this run of X-Men films have made me feel as if this is a must-see blockbuster of epic proportions. Considering this is the end of an era, and the propertys popularity in the past, that had been kind of a worrying sign. Thankfully, there's been one final trailer to turn the tide for me.

When I sat down to watch this final trailer for director Simon Kinbergs big turn at bat, I found I'm actually pretty excited to see the finished product that is Dark Phoenix. Theres a couple of really big reasons why this mornings final trailer to the end of the X-Men universe as we know it has me absolutely hyped, and I'm glad to share them with you as we're not too far out from experiencing this pretty big happening.

Now comparing that trailer for Dark Phoenix to all others, theres a pretty big jump in my feelings towards the material. The rhythm of this new trailer is the cleanest Ive seen out of all of the Dark Phoenix materials, which is surprising considering theres not all that much different in terms of whats being presented.

All the other Dark Phoenix spots did have most of the same building blocks and story beats. Jean absorbs a weird energy source and becomes unstable, mystery character Jessica Chastain is encouraging her to embrace this new power, and the world feels like its going to be in for some massive hurting. This is the A-Z story weve been presented with, and for the most part Ive remained skeptical, but willing to be swayed.

The swaying came with this final look at Dark Phoenix, as it lays it all of the same points weve seen, but with a better sense of urgency. We see a glimpse of the space rescue that starts it all, with a panicked Cyclops being a perfect catalyst to push the rest of the footage along. After that, its a pretty quick and sliding scale from Jeans miraculous survival to her campaign of utter desolation. Shes embraced pain and shes not afraid of inflicting it.

Which leads to another reason Dark Phoenix has me sold: Sophie Turners performance as Jean Grey. When added to the lineup in X-Men: Apocalypse, she was a key player, but still a member of a growing ensemble. Everyone knew how important she would be to the story, and it was touched upon briefly in that film as a sort of tease for the future.

Dark Phoenix definitely looks like it not only acknowledges that promise, it fulfills it entirely; and its because of the growth Turner is allowed to exhibit within this character. The scene in the final trailer that really sold me on Jean Grey as a threat is when she confronts Michael Fassbenders Magneto. Up until this point, hes felt like the most powerful mutant on the side of the protagonists in the X-Men films.

Regardles, that moment where Jean breaks his ever-important helmet and she tells him that threatening her isnt the best idea is the sharpest contrast from the Jean we saw in X-Men: Apocalypse, and it properly sets the table for the main course: a fight between the X-Men and one of their own. Sophie Turners simultaneously threatening and sympathetic character makes it all go round more smoothly than I could have ever imagined. If youre going to end a series like the X-Men, at least for the time being, you need to send them off on a pretty big note.

Thats what this Dark Phoenix footage really feels like its setting up. Its the end of an era, with a grand finale to something that kicked off so long ago in X-Men, and was reborn in X-Men: First Class. Much like Avengers: Endgame has been spelling out the end of the line for the first story arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dark Phoenixs last look before the big show has given weight to this apocalyptic event. There is a schism coming to the X-Men universe, and nothing will be the same once its concluded.

Prior to now, it hadnt felt this serious, but now, its feeling pretty grave. The X-Men series has always been about fear of the other, with Charles Xavier and his mutants being on the side of good an acceptance. But now, with Jean Greys Phoenix powers, the man and his students are thrown into another microcosm of that argument; and theyre not exactly on the same side as theyve traditionally been on.

If thats not a note to end an X-Men story arc on, I dont know what is; and this last trailer has given me so much to think about and anticipate with this new film. Again, all of this was in previous trailers, but the presentation in this latest one really drives all of the pieces home for me as a viewer. Thats even taking into account the fact that this trailer is more ambiguous about what exactly happens to Jennifer Lawrences Mystique, despite the promotional material previous to this point basically spoiling that plot point pretty obviously.

Having discussed all of that, let's take a look at the final trailer for Dark Phoenix one last time, and revel in what it portends:

This final trailer to Dark Phoenix not only has me ready to get out to see the spectacle that awaits, it also has me thinking this could be the best X-Men movie since First Class. Im surprised that Fox didnt lead with this sort of marketing push, because this would have been the best launching pad to a potentially huge and engrossing campaign overall. That being said, in the era of stealth release drops and streaming giants marketing a film mere hours before its set to debut, this could be the studios way of adapting to the modern marketplace.

It hasnt been an easy road for Dark Phoenix, so revolutionary and outside-the-box methods such as this do feel like an experimental way to branch traditional theatrical promotions into the future. Whatever the case may be, Im totally on board to see the full extent of the devastation that Jean Grey will bring to the X-Men universe. And Ill be there on opening night to see first it among the die hard fans.

Dark Phoenix unleashes darkness upon the world on June 7th.

Why Kevin Hart Switched From Comedy To Serious Drama In The Upside

Why Kevin Hart Switched From Comedy To Serious Drama In The Upside

Neil Burger's The Upside is very much a change of pace for Kevin Hart. While the movie does certainly have its lighter moments, and most include the comedian, the narrative depends heavily on its dramatic elements, and that's not something in which Hart has a great deal of experience. However, according to the actor, it's exactly because of his lack of experience that he wanted to make the film:

I wanted to [make The Upside] because I wanted to open this door for my resume. I want to put as much as I possibly can on my resume, so when it's all said and done I can look back at it and say, 'Wow, I really took advantage of all opportunities that I possibly could.' I didn't take it for granted; I didn't say, 'I'm comfortable and I'm just going to be content here.'

There are plenty of performers who find a niche in the industry and are more than happy to stay in that lane for their entire career (particularly in the television world), comfortable doing what they know they do best, but Kevin Hart isn't one of those people. I had the opportunity to sit down with the actor, alongside co-star Bryan Cranston, at The Upside Los Angeles press day this past fall, and one of the main subjects of conversation was Hart's move from exclusively comedic material to something with a bit more weight. It was a very purposeful move on his behalf, and was very motivational when it came to signing on for the movie.

Interestingly, this was something that Bryan Cranston was as interested in as I was, as he started our conversation by openly noting that Kevin Hart's background resulted in some initial hesitance on his part, unsure if the actor would be up for the more dramatic aspects of the project. Hart explained, however, that part of the reason why he wanted to do The Upside was because he had a specific interest in pushing himself into uncharted territory. He believes that the best way to become better at what he does is by both expanding horizons and collaborating with the right people, and he saw that opportunity with Neil Burger's film. He may not have been perfectly comfortable doing it, but that was also kind of the point. Hart explained,

I want to challenge myself to do more and obtain more, and the best way to do that is to put yourself in positions where you may not expect to be. In doing that, you find yourself surrounded by greatness and that greatness rubs off on you, and you need that. You need that to continue to grow, and for me, I want to grow.

In The Upside -- a remake of the French film The Intouchables -- Kevin Hart stars as Dell Scott, a former criminal who is trying his hardest to go straight while also providing for his son and ex-wife. A surprising opportunity comes along when he is hired to become the caretaker for Phillip Lacasse (Bryan Cranston), a gifted and popular writer who is a quadriplegic and needs round-the-clock care. A proud man, Phillip initially rejects the idea that he even needs a caretaker, hiring Dell because he was the least qualified for the job, but their time together starts to affect both of them. Starting to understand each other's perspectives, they begin to grow and change, and become better people.

With this material, Kevin Hart saw a clear cut path towards accomplishing career objectives, and he's walked away from the production and seeing the finished version of the film very proud of the work. It's a movie that saw him collaborating with talented people he respects, and he made it clear that he found the experience to be an enriching one. Said Hart,

From the actors and actresses and the director, all of the pieces to the puzzle were there. It made sense, and I'm just lucky that we were able to pull off what we pulled off. It's an amazing movie. I couldn't be happier about it.

You can watch Kevin Hart discuss his move into more dramatic material with The Upside, with a bit of additional curiosity from Bryan Cranston, by clicking play on the video below.

Following this project, it will be very interesting to see how Kevin Hart's role choices are affected, and if they become a bit more eclectic when it comes to genre. His immediate future is definitely filled with more material that is in his original wheelhouse, including titles like Jumanji 3, and Secret Life of Pets 2 -- and he's also attached to developing comedies My Own Worst Enemy, The Great Outdoors, and Ride Along 3. Clearly he's not immediately diving head first into more dramatic projects, but it might not be long before he tries to give it another shot.

Of course, experimenting with new and different tones in his work isn't the only ambitious aspect of Kevin Hart's career, as he is expanding in other areas as well. He's not hosting the Oscars, but he's become very active as a producer, not only set up with extra credits on comedies My Own Worst Enemy and The Great Outdoors, but also the upcoming television series The Donors. It's an area of his filmography in which he's becoming increasingly active, and it also ultimately could be an chance to work in new and different areas, even if he doesn't plan on starring in the films and television shows himself.

We'll wait and see how Kevin Hart's career evolves from here, but in the more immediate future we have The Upside ready to arrive in theaters. In addition to Hart and Bryan Cranston, the movie sports an awesome supporting cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Tate Donovan, and Julianna Margulies, and it will be arriving on the big screen nationwide this Friday, January 11th. To see what else will soon be coming to your local cineplex, be sure to check out CinemaBlend's 2019 Release Calendar.
