Cameron Diaz Is Actually Retired, After All
Many fans have wondered why Cameron Diaz disappeared from the silver screen for several years, and the actress recently dropped a bombshell with the announcement of her retirement from the acting world. Things got even more confusing when her The Sweetest Thing co-star Selma Blair denied those rumors, but now it looks like the former Charlie's Angels star is definitely done acting. Addressing all of the rumors surrounding her retirement and the possibility of a Sweetest Thing reunion, Diaz said:
That's so awesome. I'm totally down. I'm semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.
Cameron Diaz made that remark during an interview along with Christina Applegate and Selma Blair. Though Blair remains consistently active as an actress, Applegate admitted that she has reached "semi-retired" status now that she's a mother, making brief cameo appearances in films like A Bad Moms Christmas, but few full-blown starring roles. Similarly, Diaz confessed that she's also pretty much retired as of right now and wants to reunite with her former co-stars at some point.
This confession of retirement isn't terribly surprising, as Cameron Diaz hasn't been seen in many films in recent years. In fact, her last acting job was 2014's reboot of Annie -- which was arguably a pretty bold project to call it quits on. You can check out one of her big musical numbers, below.
Annie did not receive the warmest of welcomes from the critical community; in fact, it currently sits with a 28% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With that in mind, we would be willing to bet that there is a portion of Cameron Diaz's fanbase that would like to see her return to the screen for at least one more project.
Of course, things get a bit more confusing when we address the possibility of Hollywood actually getting to work on a full-blown reboot of The Sweetest Thing. When asked by EW who she would want to see play her character in a potential revival, Diaz explained that she would return to the role of Christina Walters in that particular scenario. Like the hero of any good 1980s action movie, there's always something to bring her out of retirement.
At this point, we're going to have to wait and see if a reboot of The Sweetest Thing will ever happen, or if Cameron Diaz will ever come out of retirement for another job.
