Not Even Lucasfilm Story Writers Know Episode IXs Title

Fans want to know what the next Star Wars movie is going to be called, and it turns out so do the people who work for Lucasfilm. Pablo Hidalgo, a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group, recently admitted on Twitter that, while he may be on the "inside" of many Star Wars decisions, he has no idea what the name of the final episode of the trilogy is called. As he recently tweeted...

Pablo Hidalgo takes things a step further on Twitter than to say that he simply doesn't know what the title of Star Wars Episode IX will be, he adds in the idea that the movie may not even have a title quite yet.

It's certainly a possibility that the film has yet to be titled. While working titles have probably been suggested or at least thought of by writer and director J.J. Abrams, the fact is that the film is in no hurry. A franchise like Star Wars doesn't need to put up posters in theaters to sell tickets and until the movie is ready to show a trailer, a title isn't exactly necessary.

The recent situation around Avengers: Endgame showed Disney that the buzz around the question of what the movie will be called is as good as any marketing the studio can pay for. Also, since we only got the title of the new Marvel movie a handful of months before it released, the same will certainly work for Star Wars so there's no rush there.

The question of the title of Episode IX has begun to heat up in recent weeks because it was at about this point two years ago that the title for Star Wars Episode VIII was revealed, leading fans to wonder if the title for the next film might be revealed soon as well. With no word from Disney or Lucasfilm, and an indication that even many senior people don't know what the movie will be called, it feels unlikely we're going to get the title revealed in the next few days.

Instead, it seems more likely that Disney will follow the strategy laid out with Avengers 4 and reveal the title of the movie as part of the film's first trailer. With Star Wars Celebration barely more than two months away, it feels like that's where we can expect the trailer to drop. Seeing it drop before the event when it's this close doesn't seem likely, and if the event goes by without a trailer at all the fans might burn Chicago down.

Numerous people have claimed to have inside information regarding the Episode IX title and titles like Son of Darkness, which is an awful title, and Balance of the Force, which is a much better one, have been suggested. While some were able to guess the title of The Last Jedi, and thus might be able to guess this new title as well, there's no evidence that any of the "leaked" titles are legit.

It does all go to show just how tightly studios are keeping information in order to prevent leaks from taking place. As part of the Lucasfiilm Story Group, Pablo Hidalgo and others are tasked keeping the Star Wars universe coherent among the various mediums and determining what qualifies as Star Wars canon and what does not.

Certainly, Episode IX itself will be canon, and as such, Hidalgo probably knows the story of the movie as well as anybody. The fact that he could probably recite dialogue from the script, but doesn't know what the movie is called, is certainly evidence that nobody who doesn't need to know the title actually does. Not that one would expect a major leak to come from Hidalgo, but you can never be too careful.

Of course, one then wonders who actually does know the title. As I mentioned, J.J. Abrams probably has given the movie a title, if only in his own head. At the same time, he doesn't get to title the movie all by himself. Kathleen Kennedy probably has veto power over the title at the very least, and so if there is an official title, we can guess the two of them probably know it. There may be others inside Lucasfilm or Disney who would need to be part of that conversation as well.

The fact that the title hasn't been released probably means that it's not yet gone to print on a million boxes holding all of the new Star Wars merch that will be launched later this year in anticipation of the new movie. A lot of leaks and spoilers come via merchandising campaigns and I would guess that Lucasfilm would simply go ahead and release the title officially before it ended up in front of too many eyes, regardless of how many NDAs those people had signed.

There likely will need to be some marketing people inside Lucasfilm who are made aware of the title so that campaigns around it can get rolling so that they're ready to go once the official reveal is made.

It is also possible, as Pablo Hidalgo suggests, that the movie doesn't have a title yet. It's easy enough to just refer to the project internally as Episode IX without giving it another name and so much of the focus of the project has clearly been on actually making the movie, so perhaps there have been no serious discussions about a title as yet. Maybe Hidalgo suggests the movie might not have a title because he would expect to know it if it did.

In the end, the title itself is just one piece of information among many that fans are potentially excited about. How this trilogy is going to end is going to be a big deal for a lot of people and there's always the hope that the title will give us some hint of what is to come in the actual movie. Of course, none of the titles of Star Wars movies really give anything away. The Force Awakens was suitable vague and The Last Jedi simply had everybody wondering who it was referring to up until the movie came out.

Once we know what Star Wars Episode IX is called we'll simply spend the rest of the year debating what the title means, which is, of course, the point.

Of course, there is always another possibility. Perhaps Lucasfilm won't bother revealing the title or the trailer until the movie comes out. Such a thing seems insane but if there's one film series that could likely pull it off it would be Star Wars. Many fans don't need to see a second of footage to buy opening night tickets, and how many people would want to go as soon as possible just to see what was at the center of all the mystery? It's unlikely, but with these reveals coming closer and closer to a film's actual release, it feels like we're getting close to a point where this could happen.

Why Suicide Squad 2's Previous Director May Have Left

Months after he was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it was announced yesterday that James Gunn has leaped over to Marvel's Distinguished Competition, a.k.a. DC, to write Suicide Squad 2, which he might also direct. The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor was previously writing and directing Suicide Squad 2, and as for why Gunn is now filling his position, supposedly it had to do with O'Connor's story for the sequel too closely resembling what's in store for Birds of Prey. According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll:

Gavin O'Connor was hired to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 in September of last year, taking over the scripting duties that The Legend of Tarzan's Adam Cozad previously handled. This past June, Todd Stashwick was brought on board to co-write Suicide Squad 2 with O'Connor, making it seem like these men would definitely be the ones picking up where David Ayer left off. But a lot can change within a few months, like Birds of Prey being prioritized. Throw in both stories being too similar, and as Justin Kroll passed along on Twitter, O'Connor departed the project and shifted focus to Has Been.

From what little we know about Birds of Prey, the story centers on Black Canary, Huntress, Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya crossing paths and clashing with Gotham City crime boss Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask. I'm guessing that Gavin O'Connor's version of Suicide Squad 2 would have seen its main characters also fighting an organized crime figure, providing a much more grounded threat for Task Force X to deal with compared to the mystical Enchantress and Incubus in the first Suicide Squad movie. In any case, that story has been scrapped, leaving James Gunn free to embark on a new creative path.

Rather being being a direct follow-up to Suicide Squad, James Gunn's Suicide Squad 2 will feature a brand-new take on the team, though it's unclear if this means it will be a full-on reboot or if it will still be set in the DC Extended Universe, but just feature a new lineup of players. Either way, we can expect to once again see super villains who have been incarcerated by the U.S. government being recruited to go on dangerous black-ops missions in exchange for reduced prison sentences and other forms of leniency.

As for Birds of Prey, it will be released on February 7, 2020, three months after Wonder Woman 1984. So far the cast consists of Margot Robbie reprising Harley Quinn, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya. Cathy Yan is directing and Christina Hodson (who's also writing the Batgirl movie) penned the screenplay.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about Suicide Squad 2, but in the meantime, you can look through our DC movies guide to learn what else the DCEU has in development.

7 Questions We Have After Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

7 Questions We Have After Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Warning: This restricted section contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald! Steer clear if you haven't yet experienced that film's particular magic.

The Fantastic Beasts series was initially wrapped in the guise of a spinoff story set in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World and for most of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them it was just that. Yet after Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald apparated into theaters this weekend, it is clear that this series is firmly in prequel territory, setting up a lot of the characters, relationships and mythology that will influence the Wizarding World decades later when the Dark Lord marks a child named Harry Potter as his equal.

With Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, J.K. Rowling wove an intricate web of intersecting histories and dense mythologies that kept even the most die hard of Potterheads on their toes. Not to mention that absolute doozy of an ending that challenged everything we thought we knew and had everyone saying, 'Wait, what?' right as the credits began to roll.

Needless to say, The Crimes of Grindelwald gave us a lot to puzzle over and unfortunately, the owl carrying my Hogwarts letter got lost and thus I cannot cast 'Revelio' to get answers now. So, with Fantastic Beasts 3 still two years away, let's take a look at the seven biggest questions we have after Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Was Grindelwald Lying? The most shocking moment in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald came at the very end when Johnny Depp's Gellert Grindelwald told Credence (Ezra Miller) that he is really Aurelius Dumbledore. More than that, the phoenix seemed to confirm that Grindelwald was being truthful. However, Grindelwald is a bad guy and it seems possible that he was lying to manipulate Credence into using his powers as an Obscurial to fight for him and his cause, especially against Dumbledore, whom he cannot fight directly.

Some are suggesting that Credence is not a Dumbledore, but that the Obscurus attached to him is actually that of Ariana Dumbledore, which would track with what we know about her, and that is the kind of thing Grindelwald might use. But as was the case with Kylo Ren telling Rey her parent's were nobodies, we have a while to wait to see if Grindelwald was lying.

Why Was Credence On That Ship?If Grindelwald was being truthful and Credence is in fact the fourth, and previously unheard of, Dumbledore sibling, then why he was on that ship (the Titanic?) along with Leta and Corvus Lestrange Jr.? Escape, concealment and opportunity all seem like possible reasons. According to the script, Credence was with his "Aunt," but that is far from definitive. An aunt could be: an actual relative; a liar; someone using Polyjuice Potion, or; someone controlled under the Imperius Curse.

So who was with Credence, and why was he taken to America? Was this method of travel used as opposed to magical means to avoid detection? Could this have been a situation where he was being hidden a la Harry Potter for some unknown reason? Either way, in this world, it seems likely that Aurelius was on that ship for a very specific reason and perhaps part of a much larger game.

Does Dumbledore Know About Credence? If there's one thing we know about Dumbledore, it is that he always plays his cards close to the vest, withholding vital information until he deems fit to share it. That said, Dumbledore gave no indication that he knew Credence's true lineage and you've got to think that if he had known, he would have gotten involved more directly to bring Aurelius in, as such a move shouldn't have been prevented by the Blood Pact.

The previously established timelines (if they are followed) regarding Dumbledore parents, Percival and Kendra, make it unlikely that those two conceived Aurelius together. Percival Dumbledore could have conceived Aurelius with someone else while he was locked up in Azkaban, which would partly explain how Albus wouldn't know about him. After what happened to Ariana, if Dumbledore doesn't know about Aurelius, this knowledge will be a powerful weapon Grindelwald can use against him.

How Will Jacob React To The Loss Of Queenie?Although the fallout between Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein is one of the more rushed and underdeveloped threads in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, I expect it to have a major impact on Dan Fogler's character in the next film. Jacob was helpless to stop Queenie from going over to Grindelwald's side and the heartbroken muggle will likely be highly motivated to get her back.

I imagine love will conquer all by the end of the series, but things could get awfully dicey before then. With Queenie firmly aligned with Grindelwald, Jacob might do something reckless like going after Grindelwald himself and/or pursuing means to defeat the dark wizard and rescue his wayward love. The lovable baker may even become a liability for the good guys as his love for Queenie will make him wary of any direct assault on Grindelwald and his followers, for fear that she will be harmed.

How Will The Blood Pact Be Broken?Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince introduced the Unbreakable Vow into the Wizarding World mythos; a magically binding promise that, if broken, kills the wizard who broke it. The Crimes of Grindelwald introduced a new type of magical covenant, the Blood Pact. Dumbledore and Grindelwald made a Blood Pact not to fight each other and that pact is preserved in a magical object.

We know that Dumbledore and Grindelwald engage in an epic duel in 1945 so obviously this Blood Pact is nullified or circumvented, and now the question is how. Thanks to some opportune greed on the part of Newt's Niffler, Dumbledore now has the Blood Pact pendant and can work to destroy it. I expect this to be one of the main story threads of the next film, as the threat posed by Grindelwald will increase to the point that the only one who can stop him is Dumbledore.

What's Next For Nagini? We didn't get to learn a lot about Nagini in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, other than the fact that she has had a rough life and being a Maledictus is a terrible fate. It was quite interesting though that, despite spending the majority of the movie by Credence's side, Nagini did not walk through the fire with him to stand with Grindelwald. Instead, at the end of the film we saw her at Hogwarts, aligned with the forces of good.

We know that Nagini will eventually permanently transform into a snake and be one of Voldemort's most faithful servants, but she is a long way off from that at this point. It will be interesting to see what role Nagini plays in the rest of this series and how she goes from rebuffing a Dark Lord to being a soul-holster for one.

What Happened Between Newt And Leta? The first Fantastic Beasts teased that Newt Scamander had a close relationship with Leta Lestrange and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald gave us some of the backstory of these two outcasts, but not all of it. Namely, we never learned exactly what happened between Newt and Leta and how she went from carving his and her initials into a desk to getting engaged to his brother, Theseus.

We saw how close Newt and Leta were at Hogwarts, so we need to know how they were driven apart. Before Leta died, she said "I love you," and the framing was such that she could have been talking to either of the Scamander brothers, or perhaps both. Zoe Kravitz once seemed to indicate that she would be in multiple Fantastic Beasts films, so if her character isn't still alive somehow, perhaps we'll get more flashbacks that answer some of these questions.

Needless to say, The Crimes of Grindelwald gave us a lot to puzzle over and unfortunately, the owl carrying my Hogwarts letter got lost and thus I cannot cast 'Revelio' to get answers now.
