SNLs A Quiet Place Parody Has Donald Glover Freaking Out Over Kanye

Over the past week or so, one of the most discussed news stories, for better or worse, has been Kanye West being...well, peak Kanye West. The rapper, fashion designer, and Mr. Kardashian has stirred the pot with his public support of President Donald Trump (totally his prerogative) and his more questionable commentary on slavery being a choice. A lot of people are not happy, including his friends. So naturally, Saturday Night Live wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to offer up a humorous take on the continuing Kanye circus. SNL tackled things in a brilliant way too, finding Solo: A Star Wars Story's Donald Glover and co. unable to ignore Kanye's actions while stuck in a parody of the year's best horror film A Quiet Place, called, A Kanye Place. Take a look:

Who knew A Quiet Place was so ripe for parody but this delivers in spades while also offering an insightful commentary on the Kanye situation and celebrity culture as a whole. First off, Donald Glover is, as always, the man, and he's hilarious in this sketch, especially his facial expressions and reactions to each successive and escalating bit of Kanye absurdity. Like in A Quiet Place, this parody finds monsters hunting by sound, so as Kenan Thompson's character says, they shouldn't talk unless absolutely necessary. But Donald Glover's character, eyes locked to his phone, relays the latest Kanye antic, with each of the other characters falling prey to the rapper's bait, unable to hold back from reacting in a reckless and loud way. The reactions are great and just like in A Quiet Place, you know right before it happens that someone is about to crank the decibel level up to fatal.

What's so incisive about this parody is how it plainly lays out, and the characters even say it, that we shouldn't talk about Kanye. What he says doesn't matter and it's only a distraction and possibly just him playing us as an easy way to get attention, in an all PR is good PR kind of way. But just like in the real world, we can't help ourselves but to react to him. Even the most staunchly quiet character in the parody, in the model of John Krasinski's Lee Abbott, can't help but to blurt out when learning that Kanye said slavery was a choice. And thus by reacting, the monsters get what they want.

While Avengers: Infinity War is, of course, claiming the lion's share of revenue at the box office, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place is still going strong, and has made over $244 million at the worldwide box office to date. Coming up you can look forward to seeing Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in what looks to be a scene-stealing performance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, in theaters on May 25th. The Insane Story Behind Mission: Impossible Fallouts Arc De Triomphe Motorcycle Stunt

The Mission: Impossible films are defined by their spectacular action set pieces. Mention Ghost Protocol, and your first thought likely goes to the Burj Khalifa sequence (and yes, your palms will get sweaty). Bring up Rogue Nation, and you might remember Tom Cruise hanging on the outside of a massive airplane as it takes off. The latest film, Mission: Impossible -- Fallout, has multiple stunt sequences to choose from, so when CinemaBlend sat down across from director Chris McQuarrie, we chose to ask him about the motorcycle chase around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. The story of how they pulled it off does NOT disappoint, so I'll let McQ take it from here:

If you have even a passing interest in filmmaking, and the construction of a blockbuster action movie, then the Mission: Impossible franchise provides you with endless fare to overanalyze, and Christopher McQuarrie serves as a masterclass professor in pulling off the magic tricks. For real, study what he does -- and has done on both Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible -- Fallout -- and then try to hire Tom Cruise. Because as McQuarrie explains, that guy is up for anything.

Earlier in our conversation with McQuarrie, he commented that Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is both lucky AND good, but luck favors the prepared... and Ethan's always prepared for whatever might come. Well, McQuarrie and his team are always prepared, so when the Arc de Triomphe was cleared from traffic for a short period of time, they jumped. They had two hours, total, to get the shot. That meant 30 minutes to get their stunt cars going in the right direction. And 15 minutes of Tom Cruise driving against traffic on a motorcycle, surrounded by cameras.

It's an astonishing scene. One that we gush about in the latest episode of ReelBlend, a podcast that we recorded IN PARIS, the night of the movie's World Premiere.

Mission: Impossible -- Fallout opens in theaters on July 27, and it delivers on the wall-to-wall action that you have come to expect from the Mission franchise. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team have to take on a personal mission after Ethan makes a crucial decision, one that puts the world at risk. In the process, they interact with an old threat... and meet new ones in the process.

It's always a blast to sit across from the team behind the Mission: Impossible films and discuss how these movies are made. Simon Pegg recently shared with us how Fortnite helps his character, Benji, train. And the cast had a fun debate about whether Ethan Hunt is a good agent, or just lucky. Lets face it, this years Oscars just isnt going to make everyone happy. Since preparations for the 91st Academy Awards began, theres been controversy after controversy. It started with the Academys announcement of the Best Popular Film Oscar in August, which has since been reevaluated, and then continued with the decision to go without a host this year after Kevin Hart stepped down from the role.

But wait, theres more! Since the telecast will not feature a host this year, the Academy has been aiming to book the biggest stars in Hollywood to present the awards. This will reportedly break the tradition of the Oscar winners from the year directly prior from presenting the award off to those next in line. According to Vanity Fair, this leaves out Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell, Frances McDormand and Allison Janney from participating in the show.

Allison Janney has recently spoken out about how bummed she is about the reported change to the ceremony. She took to the comment section of Instagram fan account @allisonjanneystyle to announce its looking like they are not going to honor the tradition this year, along with saying it breaks my heart. The post has since been deleted. Her response was sparked by other commenters discussing what she might wear at the award show.

The actress won her first Oscar last year in the Best Supporting Actress category for her portrayal of Tonya Hardings mother in I, Tonya. Her award was presented by the 2017 winner for Best Supporting Actor, Mahershala Ali, who won for Moonlight and will be up again this year in the same category for Green Book.

After being given the honor of the gold trophy, it makes sense that the actress would want to share the special moment to this years winner. If the news is true, the Academy is prioritizing shoeing in this years big stars into presenting the acting awards to cater to a more mainstream audience.

In recent years, the Oscars has declined in viewership, with the fact unknown films have won the top awards possibly playing a role with that. This year, three of eight Best Picture nominees were big box office earners, including 2018s highest grossing film Black Panther, music biopic record-breaker Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born.

The telecast has also been criticized for running too long, so this year the Academy is focusing on keeping the show at three hours. ABC President Karey Burke recently said they think their decision to go without a host this year will contribute to a shorter show this year.

The Academy has not confirmed this decision to leave out Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell, Frances McDormand and Allison Janney from presenting the acting awards during the ceremony. Well see who will present these categories when the show airs on ABC on Sunday, February 24.
