Aquamans James Wan Explains Why Meras Costume Looks Different Colors

If you're a fan of the internet, you're probably familiar with debates similar to the infamous "blue or black" dress fiasco. So naturally, with the look of Amber Heard's Mera from Aquaman looking both blue and green in various shots promoting the film, a new battle looked to be brewing. Well, you can call off the troops, as director James Wan has explained this phenomenon rather simply:

Those who were debating whether Aquaman's would-be queen was wearing a blue or green costume, you can rest safely knowing that both sides of the argument are technically right. Thanks to some costuming magic, the lighting of any particular shot will make Mera's costume reflect a myriad of blues and greens. Though if you really want to narrow things down to one color or the other, Wan says through his Twitter explanation that green's the way to go.

This isn't that big of a stretch, considering that Mera's big appearance in Justice League saw her in an outfit that was definitively green. So keeping a color scheme similar, yet different, to what was seen before helps Aquaman stay within the DC Extended Universe, while also making room for itself to be its own thing. Judging by what point in her life the film's story is going to take place during, it kind of makes sense to have a sort of non-committal costume.

With Mera not quite queen of Atlantis at this point, and not particularly linked to Aquaman in any romantic capacity in James Wan's origin story, this particular look might also be significant to the point in the Aquaman mythos that this story takes place. Traditionally, the comic depict Mera with varying shades of green, with maybe some blue in the mix. But with this approach to the origins of these characters, and their eventual ruling of Atlantis, it might not be time for the full green suit to make an appearance just yet.

So there you have it: the internet is short one debate to wage war over on message boards far and wide. Mera's outfit is sometimes blue, sometimes green, but always ready to throw down in a fight alongside Aquaman. Though, to be quite honest, there will probably be a new topic to take its place not too long after the film drops. Such is the nature of fandom.

Aquaman rides the wave into theaters on December 21, just in time for the holiday season.

John Wick Box Office: Beloved Hitman Takes Out Avengers: Endgame

By  at April 27, 2021  , , ,  No comments
John Wick Box Office: Beloved Hitman Takes Out Avengers: Endgame

You can't win the weekend box office forever. Even E.T., which somehow won the weekend box office sixteen different times, was eventually defeated. After surviving a close race with Detective Pikachu last weekend, Avengers: Endgame came into this weekend a bit beaten up, and John Wick 3 took full advantage, topping $57M in its debut weekend and almost doubling up Captain America and friends, which slipped to number two for the first time after winning its initial three weekends.

You can check out the full weekend box office results, including those for other newcomers A Dog's Journey and The Sun Is Also A Star below...

The big story here, of course, is John Wick 3. The previous two installments of the movie definitely had nice little runs at the box office, but round three almost doubled the weekend opening of round two, per Box Office Mojo. That's definitely a sign of a franchise trending in the right direction. Whether there will be a Chapter 4 is still unclear (info here WITH SPOILERS), but there's still the spinoff rolling forward over at Starz and it's hard to imagine Hollywood deciding to pass on a cash cow. As such, I'd expect to see another film too, whether it's a direct sequel or a spinoff.

Obviously, we should all tip our caps to Avengers: Endgame, as well. The film may not have won a historically significant number of weekends, but it'll go down as one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. That's ultimately a lot more important than winning a fourth weekend, which is as much related to competition as it is to absolute popularity. Obviously, the natural question moving forward is where the MCU goes from here and what the new normal as far as box office grosses might be. I don't think anyone at the Mouse House will be expecting numbers like this anytime soon, but it remains to be seen whether franchises like Black Panther will be able to eclipse their prior entries now that the MCU isn't directly building toward a clear climax.

All involved with Detective Pikachu should be happy with the film's solid second weekend, as well. Fans are already speculating on what Pokemon movies they'd like to see next, and it now seems certain we'll see another movie with a sizeable budget in the near future, which is the entire goal of trying to launch a franchise. Now whether that movie will include Pikachu or Ryan Reynolds is anyone's guess, but Detective Pikachu still deserves all the credit for proving enough people are invested in Pokemon to make a $100M+ budget a reasonable expense.

Travis Knight Denies Rumors Of Directing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Travis Knight Denies Rumors Of Directing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on a roll during Phase Three, with every single new installment bringing massive box office numbers and rave reviews. But there is some trouble in paradise, especially as its relates to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The fan favorite property's future in currently unknown, with Guardians 3 put on indefinite hold after Disney fired James Gunn this past July.

Plenty of names have been rumored to be picking up Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with the most recent one being Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight. Now Knight has seemingly denied this reports, as he was quote in an Italian outlet saying:

After Bumblebee, my goal is to return to work at the animation studios Laika, my 'child', bringing with me all the baggage of experiences I have gained with this project. I'm a huge fan of what Marvel did, it's no surprise for anyone to know that as a child I was a huge fan of comics. But no, it's just a rumor!

While this might not be an exact translation, the message seems pretty clear. The rumors of Travis Knight taking over the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise are just that: rumors. The director is reportedly aiming to focus back on Laika Studios, instead of taking on another giant blockbuster project-- especially one with such big shoes to fill.

Travis Knight's comments come to us from Italian outlet BadTaste. It, and seem to put the kabosh on reports of his involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The threequel was originally set to be one of the first installments to arrive after Avengers 4, presumably hitting theaters in the wake of Spider-Man: Far From Home. But James Gunn was fired from Marvel after offensive tweets from a decade ago resurfaced, and the House of Mouse took quick action to distance itself from the director.

It appears Marvel may still be on the hunt for a director, which makes a great deal of sense. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is all told through James Gunn's eyes, with the director's personal tastes and sensibilities running throughout. Gunn's dance moves, taste in music, and sense of humor are what give the Guardians movies their signature style, and it's going to be hard to find someone with the same vision and taste level.

Travis Knight is perhaps best known for his work on Kubo and the Two Strings. He has a ton of experience in animation, and worked with stop-motion for Kubo and the other projects which come from Laika Studios. In fact, Bumblebee is his live-action directorial debut. But given the heavy use of visual affects to bring the titular robots to life, it's an interesting combination of his skills.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues to be on hold until further notice. Bumblebee will arrive in theaters on December 21st, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Following writer/director James Gunn's controversial firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earlier this year, there's been a lot of speculation about who will replace him. However, despite rumors to the contrary , don't expect Bumblebee director Travis Knight to take the reins for the third installment in the popular franchise.
