Admiral Ackbar Actor Calls His Death In Star Wars: The Last Jedi A Huge Disappointment

The past few years have been very kind to Star Wars fans. Once Disney acquired Lucasfilm, there's been a variety of new and exciting projects hitting theaters, expanding the galaxy far, far away in the process. Standalone films and the upcoming Mandalorian TV series broke new ground for the property, although the main focus on the generations of fans is on the main franchise.

J.J. Abrams' kickstarted the story back up with The Force Awakens, which saw plenty of familiar faces return to the big screen. This includes the always meme-worthy Admiral Ackbar. But the iconic rebel met a swift end in The Last Jedi, and that's a decision that seriously upset the puppeteer who brought him to life over the years. Tim Rose is the man behind Ackbar, and recently expressed his disappointment about the character's handling in the sequel trilogy. He said:

After The Force Awakens -- for whatever reason, length of picture, whatever -- it all got cut out. So after waiting 30 years to reprise Ackbar I was a little disappointed with Ackbar's role in that picture. So in The Last Jedi, I was quite looking forward to maybe them giving him something more juicy. We were only given the script on the day when we were shooting that piece of script, so each day I would come to work going, Is today the day when Ackbar gets something a bit more involving? And I looked at my script and I went, Oh, Ackbar's going out of the window. Well, that's that then! I wasnt quite dead yet.

Yikes. It turns out that Admiral Ackbar had a larger role in The Force Awakens, but it ultimately landed on the cutting room floor. There was a decent amount of world building to get through in Episode VII, so Tim Rose understood. At least, until he was killed off in The Last Jedi's opening sequence.

Admiral Ackbar might not have been as popular as franchise favorites like Han Solo or General Leia, but his role in the Star Wars franchise goes back to 1983's Return of the Jedi. As such, Tim Rose was hoping he'd have a meaty role once the sequel trilogy finally happened. Unfortunately, Ackbar's presence was mostly tertiary, and he got an unceremonious death scene.

Related: All The Major Star Wars: The Last Jedi Character Deaths

Ackbar was killed along with the rest of The Resistance Leaders when the First Order attacked the fleet, and a TIE fighter blew up the commanding ship's bridge. Leia was able to use her dormant Force Abilities to save herself, but the rest of the leadership wasn't so lucky.

In his same conversation with Jamie Stangroom, Tim Rose described how salt was rubbed in his wound on the set of The Last Jedi, saying:

We finished all of our bits and they asked me to come down to camera. And I thought, Oh well, maybe theyre going to say thank you for being one of the heritage characters and giving 30 years and all that. But what they did was, they gave me a Millennium Falcon sign that had the day and the date on it, the scene number, and they said, Can you look at camera and say "It's a wrap?" Because that would be really funny. I was actually in tears in the suit because I thought - after everything, after hoping thered be something, after knowing there wasn't going to be anything else, Ackbar's final moment before he went in to the box was a big joke about It's a wrap. They just thought Wouldnt it be funny? And that was the sum total of my life as Ackbar.

Ouch. While the Resistance Leaders were killed off in The Last Jedi in order to move the story forward, Tim Rose's feelings were hurt in the process. And when he was asked to film some B-roll for special features/sizzle reels, there was an extra level of betrayal for the puppeteer.

As a reminder, you can check out the scene below. Ackbar isn't featured, but can be seen behind Leia before the bridge is destroyed.

Aside from his onscreen appearances, Admiral Ackbar has had a life on the page and small screen. Plus, his iconic "It's a trap!" line from Return of The Jedi has been meme-d more times than one can count. So while Tim Rose might have been disappointed with his tenure as the character, Ackbar will still live on forever with the generations of Star Wars fans.

The next installment in the Star Wars franchise is The Rise of Skywalker on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

James McAvoy's Body Was Signed By Celebs At The Oscars

James McAvoy's Body Was Signed By Celebs At The Oscars

When you meet a celebrity, you may ask for a picture together to get those social media points. Or if youre old fashioned, you might ask for an autograph. But what about when celebrities see each other? Well, apparently when they see James McAvoy, they sign his body, or at least thats what happened at last nights Oscars. Check it out:

Celebrities are just like us, only weirder. Apparently after James McAvoy presented, he was mugged by his fellow celebrities, who wanted to sign him because reasons? He looks part aghast and part puzzled about the whole situation, even hilariously calling them entitled graffiti mentalists in his Instagram post.

Perhaps the other celebrities were treating the Oscars like the end of senior year and wanted to sign James McAvoys shirt as if it was his yearbook. Or maybe it was kind of like the end of a soccer game where everyone swaps jerseys, only here, they swapped signatures.

Or maybe, amidst all these well-dressed celebrities in their absurdly expensive designer fashions, some rogues, or thuglebrities as James McAvoy called them, saw a pristine, crisp white shirt and thought I want to destroy something beautiful and attacked the Glass actor. And with red freaking Sharpies no less!

Now, assuming you dont have an index of mirror images of celebrity signatures, youre probably asking, who are these hooligans and criminals who defaced the personage of the great James McAvoy? The actor identified some of them in his Instagram post; their names are mostly familiar, and with their signatures on the crucial piece of evidence, it shouldnt be hard for the LAPD to make the appropriate arrests.

Among the signees is James McAvoys girlfriend, Lisa Liberati, and his Atomic Blonde co-star, Charlize Theron. Apparently the ordeal she put him through in Glass wasnt enough because Sarah Paulson also took a red Sharpie to the actor, as did Mr. Glass himself, Samuel L. Jackson. Other culprits include Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro and what appears to be Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson and her fellow MCUer Michael B. Jordan.

We dont know how many more signatures he got, but it turns out that this crime was an inside job and James McAvoy planned the whole thing. According to ET, the actor intends to auction the shirt off for charity, a spur of the moment idea that he described as off the cuff and alcohol fueled. Its an admirable idea from James McAvoy and while he wont win Best Dressed, his attire may ultimately be the most deserving of praise.

This isnt the only thing James McAvoy deserves praise for, because hes pretty great onscreen as well. Following his fantastic performance in Januarys Glass, the actor has a big 2019 ahead of him. Next up he has what may be his final performance as Professor X in Dark Phoenix. After that, he plays the adult version of Bill in IT Chapter 2. He will also be a part of BBC and HBOs His Dark Materials adaptation.

Some Beloved Actors Were Left Out Of The In Memoriam Reel And Fans Are Furious

Some Beloved Actors Were Left Out Of The In Memoriam Reel And Fans Are Furious

Every Oscar ceremony takes a break from all the jokes, musical numbers, awards and speeches to honor the industry members who passed away the previous year. Its a somber, yet celebratory moment, remembering those who are gone, their memory and the legacy they left behind. Yet, like pretty much everything else associated with the Academy Awards, the 'In Memoriam' segment is not immune from controversy.

When someone is left out of the 'In Memoriam' reel, people take notice, and last nights reel had some glaring omissions which fans are furious about, as EW has reported. Perhaps the biggest name missing from the reel was actress and comedian Carol Channing who passed away on January 15. As you can see below, her absence was noted.

Sometimes actors are omitted from the 'In Memoriam' reel because they had more significant careers in television, and Carol Channing was definitely better known for her work on the small screen. However, as this tweet highlights, Carol Channing was nominated for an Oscar herself in 1968 for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Carol Channing wasnt the only omission though and as you would expect, Twitter was there to shame the Academy and offer some love to those who didnt make the cut, including character actor Dick Miller. Take a look:

If you included everyone that was a part of the industry from craft services to studio execs, the Oscar ceremony would be a three-hour 'In Memoriam' reel. The Oscars seemingly give precedence to those who the viewing public (this is a TV show after all) would recognize.

As noted above, Dick Miller had 181 credits to his name, including films like Gremlins, Little Shop of Horrors, The Terminator and Small Soldiers. People may not know his name, but they should know his face. Dick Miller and Carol Channing were just the tip of the iceberg though and there were plenty of others omitted as well, as the following tweet illustrates.

R. Lee Ermey was in TV shows and lent his voice to video games, but is best known for being the drill sergeant in Stanley Kubricks Full Metal Jacket. Like Carol Channing, Sondra Locke was an Academy Award nominee. Austin Powers Verne Troyer was undoubtedly recognizable to audiences. When it comes to Stanley Donen, who directed Singin in the Rain, the omission may have been a matter of timing since he died on February 21 of this year.

Other names that have been mentioned on social media are actress Kaye Ballard, producer Andy Vajna, House of Cards actor Reg E. Cathy, actor John Mahoney, actor David Ogden Stiers, actor Harry Anderson, actress Julie Adams and director Jon Schnepp.

Sadly, no matter how long the ceremony is, someone will always be left out of the 'In Memoriam' reel. This is just one of the many things to discuss about last nights ceremony, and if there is a silver lining to the omissions, perhaps it is that the fan outcry reminds the public of these people who are gone now and maybe encourages those unfamiliar with their work to discover it for the first time.

You can check out the 'In Memoriam' segment in the video below.
