Star Wars: Episode IX Has More Carrie Fisher Footage To Use Than We Initially Thought

Star Wars: Episode IX Has More Carrie Fisher Footage To Use Than We Initially Thought

When the cast list for Star Wars: Episode IX was announced last week, we finally received the answer to the General Leia Organa question that we have been wondering since the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher. Choosing not to use CGI or recast the role of the character who was still alive at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film will instead incorporate unused footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to conclude her story. But J.J. Abrams actually has more to work with than just the unused footage from Episode VII. ABC News' Clayton Sandell revealed that Episode IX will also be using footage from The Last Jedi, as he explained:

I talked to Todd Fisher today about all of this and he has been talking with J. J. Abrams about it. I asked him, because the press release said they were using unused footage from The Force Awakens. And I asked about The Last Jedi, and he told me that they are also using unused footage from The Last Jedi... And I said, 'Well how many minutes do they have of this stuff,' and he said, 'I can't tell you that!'

I've actually been wondering since the announcement that unused Carrie Fisher footage from The Force Awakens would be used in Episode IX why The Last Jedi wasn't mentioned and if there just wasn't really anything extra to work with on that front. Speaking to Star Wars News Net's The Resistance Broadcast podcast, Clayton Sandell allayed those concerns and lets us know that Carrie Fisher's brother, Todd Fisher, told him that J.J. Abrams will be pulling from two movies worth of extra footage featuring the actress. That said, exactly how many minutes of footage they have from both films is a mystery. It may not be a lot, but every little bit counts ,and any extra footage makes it easier for J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio to give Leia a story.

How much material with Carrie Fisher they have depends on how much J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson shot for their respective films that didn't make the cut and how much coverage they have. There could be a lot of footage or a little, but what this news does tell us is that J.J. Abrams will be pulling from all the sources available to include Carrie Fisher in this movie and craft a fitting end to the Skywalker saga that includes having Leia onscreen. Todd Fisher also told Clayton Sandell that there are big surprises coming in the unused footage, so that makes it sound like Leia could have a meatier, or at least more important role than we might imagine given that they only have a limited amount to work with for Episode IX.

Using a CGI character or recasting Princess Leia always seemed like two bad options for Episode IX, but they could have killed her off in the opening crawl as a way to acknowledge her absence. Carrie Fisher's character was expected to have a bigger role in Episode IX prior to her passing, so at least this way she will still get to be in this movie. The fact that J.J. Abrams & Co. think that they have enough footage to tell a story where she plays a part and gets a proper sendoff is encouraging.

Star Wars: Episode IX closes the book on the Skywalker saga on December 20, 2019. For all of the upcoming Star Wars movies, real and rumored, check out our guide.

Hellboy's Doug Jones Almost Cameoed In The Reboot

Hellboy's Doug Jones Almost Cameoed In The Reboot

Even though fans were upset that it wasn't a true sequel, a new Hellboy reboot is arriving in April. The movie features an all-new cast and ditches most of the characters that starred in the previous two Hellboy movies. This includes Abe Sapien, the aquatic psychic played by Doug Jones. Abe isn't set to appear in the new Hellboy but apparently a cameo was at one point on the table for Doug Jones.

There was a chance that a cameo might have happened, but not as things progressed.

It's fair to say that you wouldn't recognize Doug Jones if you saw him walking down the street. He's best known for roles that require heavy make-up as he usually plays supernatural creatures. He's known for acting with his body and motions, which he put to full use as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy series. A third appearance as Abe was ultimately not in the cards, but Jones almost had a chance to appear in the Hellboy remake.

As Doug Jones told The Hollywood Reporter, there was early talk that he might get a cameo for Hellboy. It's unclear if this cameo would have been as Abe Sapien (which is doubtful), a different creature, or as a human. Seeing as how Jones' specialty is monsters, I'd wager that he would have headed to the makeup chair for any kind of cameo.

However, Doug Jones was too busy sitting in a different makeup chair to commit to a cameo. As Jones continued to tell THR, the cameo offer came while he was still neck deep in Star Trek: Discovery. Jones stars as the alien Lt. Saru on CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery, and he was too busy filming episodes of the TV series to pop in for a Hellboy cameo.

Reboot means recasting, and I'm told this first reboot does not have anybody in it from the original film. I received an offer to do a cameo, but I was deeply immersed in Star Trek: Discovery when that offer came in, so I couldn't do it.

When Hellboy arrives in theaters, fans likely won't see Abe Sapien or Doug Jones. The reboot is starting fresh with an all-new cast of characters that includes David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, and Daniel Dae Kim. Even if Abe Sapien does show up for future movies, it likely won't be Jones playing the part. It's just as Jones says: "reboot means recasting."

You won't find Doug Jones in the movie, but there's still other things to see in Hellboy when the comic book movie arrives in theaters on April 12, 2019. To learn more about the film, here's what we know so far. For everything else arriving in theaters this year, be sure to check out our 2019 movie release guide.

Yes, Sony Is Making An Actual Spider-Man Shared Universe

Yes, Sony Is Making An Actual Spider-Man Shared Universe

Ever since Sony announced that it was making Spider-Man spinoff films, there have been more questions than answers about the direction of these films, whether or not Tom Holland's Peter Parker will be a part of them and their relationship to the MCU. It has also never been explicitly spelled out if these spinoffs are just meant to be standalone films or part of a shared universe. Some light has been shed on this matter, though, because Emily Carmichael, co-writer on Pacific Rim Uprising, met with Sony last year for one of the spinoffs, and it was apparent to her that this is indeed going to be a shared universe, as she explained:

I was one of the directors called in to pitch on Silver & Black. At one of my early meetings on the project I got a peek at the phonebook-sized compendium of characters Sony has the rights to, all characters tangentially related to Spider-Man. It's a cinematic universe, all right.

So if there was any doubt, it looks as though Sony will join the MCU and the DCEU in the shared comic book universe game. What Emily Carmichael revealed to Vulture paints a clear picture that Sony's goal is to build a shared universe, where the many characters of Spider-Man's rogues gallery, his allies, foes and frenemies will all populate, exist and interact in the same universe. As someone who was in the running for Silver & Black, Emily Carmichael was naturally shown some of what Sony is hoping to do with that film and the wider universe. The fact that she saw a binder full of characters goes to show just how many assets Sony's Spider-Man rights grant it access to. It's all more than enough to build out a shared universe.

Given that having a cinematic universe is the aspirational goal of pretty much every studio these days, I think we all assumed that Venom is meant to be the first chapter in a shared universe. However, up until this point it hasn't been made entirely clear. Venom, Silver and Black and Morbius could just as easily have been individual standalone franchises, despite the modern expectation that comic book properties cross over. The knowledge that this is going to be a shared universe provides us with greater insight into what we can expect from these films, while also leaving many questions and raising a few more.

What we've seen from Venom so far indicates that Ruben Fleischer's film will be rather dark and more adult than what we are accustomed to in Peter Parker's adventures. With this universe being shared, that means that Silver & Black and Morbius will theoretically have to conform to this tone to fit seamlessly together. One also now assumes that like all shared universes, the Spider-verse will be building towards something, like a team-up event film. The big question is what that event will be.

There are many pros and cons to what we've seen and heard about Sony's Spider-verse so far, and the Spider-Man of it all still remains unresolved. If this is indeed a shared universe, then what ties everything together if not the Web-Slinger? I'm guessing Eddie Brock might fill that role, but we won't know for sure until Venom hits theaters on October 5. Although perhaps Comic-Con this week might provide more answers.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all your superhero news, and for all of the upcoming Spider-Man spinoffs, check out our guide.

Shazam's Editor Reveals The Scene That Was The Toughest To Get Right

Shazam's Editor Reveals The Scene That Was The Toughest To Get Right

Warning: SPOILERS for Shazam! are ahead!

As one expects from a superhero movie, Shazam! was packed with a lot of action-packed moments, all of which came with their own unique challenges to pull off. As a result, just because a scene or sequence was envisioned in a particular way on script or while shooting doesnt mean it came together looking exactly like that when finally assembled.

One of those sequences was the final battle between the eponymous protagonist and the Seven Deadly Sins-powered Doctor Sivana, which led to Billy sharing his power with his adoptive siblings so they too could become adult superheroes. I learned this when I recently spoke with the editor of Shazam!, Michel Aller, as this was her response when I asked what scenes changed the most from how they were initially shot to how they were edited together:

The end battle, really, was the biggest one that evolved. It had so many moving pieces that we had to work with and figure out, showing these new characters, the adult family, and giving them enough screen time, and still having the screen time between Sivana and Shazam. That end sequence, I wouldnt say its just one scene, but the whole end battle was the one evolved the most.

Theres definitely a lot going on in that final Shazam! battle. It would be one thing if it had just been a straightforward fight between Shazam and Sivana, but not only did Mary, Freddy, Eugene, Darla and Pedro joining the fray widen the scope, but there was also the fact that the Seven Deadly Sins were able to separate from Sivana and go their own ways. So there were numerous things to keep track of within that carnival battleground.

As a result, not only was the final Shazam! battle the sequence that evolved the most during the editing phase, it was also the hardest one to cut together. In Michel Allers words:

It was probably the hardest, because you want to balance all these characters, telling everyone whats going on, where theyre at, and keeping them interested and keeping the story moving forward. It was definitely the end battle. You have a lot of moving pieces to work with.

Even with all those moving pieces to track, ultimately the battle culminated with the showdown between Shazam and Sivana, adversaries that have been fighting on the printed page and in other media for eight decades. Remembering that main antagonist loses his powers if all of the Sins are out of his body, the superpowered Billy Batson managed to goad Envy out of Sivana, leaving the chrome-domed baddy helpless. Upon taking the Eye of Sin from Sivana, Billy imprisoned all of the Sins back within it, and the Shazam family redeposited the artifact back at the Rock of Eternity.

While this sequence had to go into the Shazam! final cut no matter what, there were 20-24 minutes of scenes that were taken out. However, Michel Aller expects youll be able to watch most of these when Shazam! comes out on Blu-ray and DVD later this year, with some of these excised scenes possibly including one where Mary confronts Billy as hes sneaking out of the Vasquez house and the original version of Sivanas murder spree. For now, catch Shazam! in theaters while you can, as the next DCEU movie isnt coming out until next February (although Joker is holding down the overall DC fort in October).

Be sure to read CinemaBlends review of Shazam! and stay tuned for updates on how Shazam! 2 is coming along. Those of you interested in learning what other DC movies are in development can find that information in our handy guide, or you can look through our 2019 release schedule to plan when youll be going to the movie theater later this year.
