M. Night Shyamalans Glass Trailer Is Creepy And Epic

At first, M. Night Shyamalan's Split looked like it would just be another addition to the director's resume, but the 2016 horror movie's final scene revealed that this story was set in the same universe as Shymalan's 2000 movie, Unbreakable. After Split performed excellently critically and commercially, a sequel was ordered that also doubles as the long-awaited follow-up to Unbreakable. Titled Glass, the 2019 movie will see Bruce Willis' David Dunn, Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass, and James McCoy's Kevin Wendell Crumb crossing paths, and following the release of the poster and teaser videos, the first Glass trailer has finally been released. Check it out, below!

Last year, it was announced that American Horror Story star Sarah Paulson was joining the cast of Glass as Dr. Ellie Stapler, and as we see in the first Glass trailer, she's the main connective thread between the Unbreakable and Split players. Stapler is a psychiatrist who specializes in individuals who believe that they are superheroes. In a sense, that's true for our trip. David Dunn has his strength, Kevin Wendell Crumb has his numerous personalities (The Beast being the most dangerous of them), and while Elijah Price's bones are extremely fragile, he boasts an impressive IQ. Unfortunately for David, who somehow ends up in the same psychiatric hospital as Kevin and Wendell, they're about to team up. This may be the "real world" we're dealing with in Glass rather than a comic book, but there's no question that David will need to stop Kevin and Elijah before the body count starts rising.

Glass' cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy reprising Casey Cooke, the girl who was kidnapped by Kevin in Split, but survived her encounter with The Beast; Spencer Treat Clark reprising Joseph Dunn, David Dunn's admiring son; and Charlene Woodard reprising Mrs. Price, Elijah Price's mother. While Unbreakable was a thriller and Split rested firmly in the horror realm, Glass is balancing a fine line between the two genres. No doubt fans of Split are glad to see more of Kevin Wendell Crumb and his other personalities causing trouble, but because it's been nearly two decades since Unbreakable screened in theaters, no doubt fans of that movie are ecstatic to see that movie's mythology explored further. The reputation of superhero movies has improved a lot since Unbreakable's release, and while it wouldn't be fair to compare Glass to the likes of what Marvel and DC churn out, this movie looks like it will be an especially unique entry to the genre, on top of those existing horror and thriller elements.

Slender Man Showed Up To A Movie Theater, And People Freaked Out

It's no secret that cosplay is a huge element of the modern-day fandom landscape. That's especially true in the horror world, as conventions are often chock full of fans who dress up as Halloween killer Michael Myers, Friday the 13th slasher Jason Voorhees, or Nightmare on Elm Street icon Freddy Krueger. And with Sony's Slender Man hitting theaters over the weekend, one fan took things to a terrifying new level by showing up to a movie theater dressed as the titular monster.

Ironically enough, this didn't actually happen at a screening the new Sony film. Per a report from News 12 Westchester, the incident occurred at a showing of Mission: Impossible - Fallout in New York. A group of kids reportedly snuck into a 7 p.m. showing of the movie, with one dressed in the signature suit and white mask that Slender Man is known to wear, silently walking into the theater during the climax of the Tom Cruise movie. A group of moviegoers was apparently terrified by the arrival of the character in the theater, and quickly rushed out of the auditorium to notify management and call the authorities.

The attendees of the Mission: Impossible - Fallout screening were understandably upset about the situation, and later accused the management at the theater of being part of the joke. However, video taken during the aftermath of the ordeal seemed to show workers at the cinema explaining that they had told the teens to wait outside of the theater for the next showing that would take place in that auditorium -- a screening of Slender Man, which would explain the costume. It is against policy for movie theater attendees to wear masks to theaters, so we still don't know if management was aware of the costume when the teens arrived at the theater.

Slender Man is based on the creepypasta character of the same name. The new film follows a group of girls in a Massachusetts down who summon the demon in order to learn more about the mysterious death of a friend. However, they soon discover the folly of their actions when the demon infects their lives and begins to drive them insane -- if it doesn't merely kill them first. Directed by David Birke, the film stars The Conjuring's Joey King (who has slowly but surely carved out a very comfortable niche for herself as a modern-day scream queen), as well as Julia GoldaniTelles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso, and Javier Botet.

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Annihilation. If you have not yet seen the film, and don't wish to know any important details about the end, please bookmark this page and save it until after your screening!While writer/director Alex Garland is best known for his contributions behind the camera, it may surprise fans to learn how he directly contributed to the most terrifying scene in his latest film, Annihilation. During production, Garland took it upon himself to operate the creature in the mutant bear sequence, and he did what he could to try and shock his actresses while slowly crawling around the small house. As seen on screen, this was very effective, but the filmmaker recently told me that it was actually Tessa Thompson who really scared him during the shoot, basically because she is just a crazy talented actor:

Actually, [Tessa Thompson] freaked me out. She looked so frightened and worried at one point that I was afraid. I somehow thought, 'Oh my God, she's not acting. Something terrible has happened. Oh, Christ.' But actually she was acting. I remember it really unsettled me, actually. But she's an incredible actor.

I first learned about Alex Garland operating the mutant bear from Tessa Thompson when I spoke to her earlier this year during Annihilation's pre-release Los Angeles press day, and I followed up with the writer/director about it when I spoke with him on the phone late last week. I brought up the sequence and mentioned to him that Thompson had sincerely complemented his work with the bear, when he countered with a compliment of his own. It turns out she is such a talented individual that she fully convinced Garland she was legitimately terrified of being eaten by a horrific creature. And to his credit, that's how you feel watching her in the scene as well.

Thankfully it sounds like Alex Garland didn't call, "Cut" mid-take, which allowed him to capture the full power of the scene. Of course, one big question still remains: why exactly was it that Alex Garland wound up operating the mutant bear in the first place? Thankfully, the filmmaker was very forthright in explaining. I asked him how he wound up with that gig, and he noted that it was really a matter of convenience, detailing the work that went into making that Annihilation scene as powerful as possible. Said Garland,

We had different incarnations of the bear that we were using for different shots. So sometimes there's this huge stuntman who was knocking people out of the way and turning around, and then there was a really, really beautiful animatronic head that was used for some of the shot. And then the other times, for reasons to do with timing, it was just easier if I picked up this big foam bear head and used that, because rather than explaining exactly what it had to do, it was easier just to do it.

Fans can now relive this terrifying sequence over and over again, with Annihilation now available on home video. The film has been released not only on DigitalHD, but as of Tuesday is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. The Black Widow Movie Has Its Director

Black Widow has been a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since being introduced in Iron Man 2, from being one of the founding Avengers to helping Steve Rogers expose HYDRA's existence within S.H.I.E.L.D. But unlike the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and even Hulk, Scarlett Johansson's iteration of Natasha Romanoff hasn't led her own standalone adventure. That's going to change in Marvel's Phase 4, and it's being reported that Cate Shortland will be the one directing the Black Widow movie.

Marvel's hiring of Cate Shortland for the Black Widow movie marks the end of an extensive search that resulted in the studio interviewing between 70 to 75 candidates for the director position. Finding a woman to helm the superhero blockbuster was reportedly a priority, and A United Kingdom's Amma Asante and Novitiate's Maggie Betts were two of the finalists for the job alongside Shortland. In the end, though, Shortland was selected to direct Black Widow, and according to THR, Scarlett Johansson pushed for Shortland to be hired.

Cate Shortland's credits include 2012's Lore, last year's Berlin Syndrome and episodes of TV shows like Bad Cop, Bad Cop and The Secret Life of Us. Marvel began its director search in April, three months after it was announced that the Black Widow movie was in development, and three weeks ago, it was reported that Shortland was at the top of the list. Now the news is official, and no doubt Shortland will soon be meeting with Scarlett Johansson and writer Jac Schaeffer to hash out the upcoming movie. Black Widow will be the MCU's second, solo female-led movie, following behind next year's Captain Marvel, as well as the franchise's first movie to be directed solely by a woman, as Anna Boden is co-helming Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck.

We've learned bits and pieces of Black Widow's past in the MCU (particularly in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron), and rather than the Black Widow movie following along with Natasha Romanoff in the present day, the plan is reportedly for the tale to be set before the events of Iron Man 2. If that is indeed the case, that would mark another superheroine-led movie being a prequel, since Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman over at DC had the spotlight shined on her during World War I for her first movie and in the 1980s for her next movie.
