The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have been making successful blockbusters for a decade, but the spectacle and stakes were on another level for Avengers: Infinity War. All of the MCU's biggest characters collided to the epic battle against Josh Brolin's Thanos, with The Russo Brothers managing to serve each character in the process. Infinity War also shocked audiences by having Thanos win, and destroy half the galaxy with the snap of his Gauntlet. Moviegoers are eager to learn how the narrative will continue, and if its somehow possible to bring back those fallen characters. Mark Ruffalo recently spoke to Avengers 4's reshoots, revealing that the ending of the Phase Three conclusion hadn't been completed. As he tells it,
Well we're doing reshoots starting in September. And then we'll go back into the international tour, we'll go on tour. Then you guys will get the second installment. Which we don't even know what it's gonna be yet. We're not just doing reshoots, we're going to finish the movie, which we really didn't get to finish totally when we left it last year.
Talk about shooting from the hip. While most of Avengers 4 and Infinity War were filmed around the same time, it appears that the reshoots will have a significant affect on the upcoming blockbuster. Namely, it'll give it an ending, arguably the trickiest aspect of Avengers 4.
Mark Ruffalo's comments on The Marvelists podcast will likely elicit a mixed bag of emotions from the hardcore Marvel fans out there. While having a concrete sense of where the film stands is surprisingly transparent, knowing Avengers 4's finale hasn't been decided will likely inspire some trepidation. Do The Russo Brothers have an end game? We'll just have to wait and see, as the movie arrives in less than a year.
This new revelation may have particular weight when it comes to the fate of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Dave Bautista recently revealed that they had shot great footage for Avengers 4, but that James Gunn's firing and Guardians 3's indefinite hold may affect how The Russo Brothers wrap up the group's story. So if the franchise is being killed or put on a longer hold, it could potentially be revealed during the events of Avengers 4.
It should come to no surprise that Mark Ruffalo got so chatty about the exact state of Avengers 4, considering the actor's track record in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland are the most spoiler-heavy Avengers, with Ruffalo having missteps like live streaming the audio of Thor: Ragnarok, or accidentally spoiling the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Now we'll have to see how the end of Avengers 4 turns out, with the added knowledge of Ruffalo's admission.
