The Disney and Fox Merger Finally Has A Closing Date

The Disney/Fox merger has been drawing nearer, but its finally come time for one giant studio to swallow another. Disney has officially announced that its $71.3 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox will close on March 20. Jiminy Crickets!

After the House of Mouse received its last major approval from regulators in Mexico, the company announced the formal date for the closing process, per Variety. The deal between the two major studios is certainly a huge game-changer for the entire media landscape and will officially start taking shape next Wednesday.

Walt Disney Studios will soon have control over Foxs film, television studios and cable channels, including National Geographic and FX. Disney will also obtain Foxs 30% holdings in Hulu, in addition to its own 30%, giving the studio a 60% majority share and own 39% in European satellite company, Sky. However, Disney was not approved by government regulators to take over Foxs regional sports channels since it already owns ESPN.

Disney will also assume over $13 billion in net debt from Fox ,and the merger is expected to prompt as many as 4000 layoffs in positions that overlap between the two companies. The inception of a new entity of the Fox Corporation that will include the assets that will not be part of the Disney deal will also launch in line with the closing date of the Disney/Fox merger.

The closing of the deal could be good news for Marvel fans excited for the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to potentially be part of the same family as Disneys MCU. Some of Foxs major franchises such as the Alien, Predator, Kingsman, Die Hard and Night of the Museum would also be under Disneys new umbrella and could potentially have a presence in Disneys theme parks in the future.

Fox joins Disneys holdings just as the company gears up for the launch of its own streaming service, Disney+, later this year, which is set to include every film in the Disney library along, as well original movies and television shows from the Star Wars, the Marvel universe and more.

Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger has reportedly taken a pay cut in light of the merger, as a $500,000 annual increase to his base salary and $8 million increase in bonus was agreed to be eliminated from his paycheck though his approximately $15 million salary still stands as one of the highest salaries for a media executive.

Disney is heading into perhaps one of its biggest years ever as three big live-action remakes, three MCU films (including an impressive $455 worldwide opening start for Captain Marvel over the weekend), two huge animated sequels and Star Wars: Episode IX are coming out, along with the opening of Galaxys Edge in the parks. The closing of the Fox deal only expands this. Mickey Mouse means business and perhaps world domination?

Matt Reeves Is Playing Coy About Ben Affleck's Involvement In The Batman

Matt Reeves Is Playing Coy About Ben Affleck's Involvement In The Batman

Nobody is quite sure what's really going on with the planned Batman solo movie. While the project does seem to be moving forward, though quite slowly, it's far from confirmed that the current DC film universe Batman, Ben Affleck, will actually be in it. Director Matt Reeves isn't helping the situation. While he confirms that the script, which he expects to have a completed draft soon, is connected to the existing film universe, he's not confirming Ben Affleck will be in it. According to Reeves...

There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well. We're one piece of many pieces so I don't want to comment on that except to say that I'm focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.

The fact that the Batman solo movie does, in fact, connect to the DC universe is important because we know that not all movies that Warner Bros. is currently working on actually do. There's a Joker movie coming that won't be related to the existing version of the character played by Jared Leto, and it was always possible the Batman movie could end up working like that. However, it seems from what Matt Reeves recently said at a Television Critics Association panel (via Slashfilm) this movie will absolutely be part of that universe.

But with that being the case, you'd expect Ben Affleck to be in it as he is the current DC universe Batman. Matt Reeves does say that he's still speaking with Affleck, but he's clearly stopping short of making a statement on the man's participation as an actor one way or another. Affleck himself has suggested that his days as Batman might be numbered, and it's not like Reeves saying that Affleck would be reprising his role would actually be news WB would want to keep under wraps, so it certainly does sound like there's a possibility that somebody else could play Batman here.

Of course, both things could still be true. Wonder Woman was a movie that took place years before Justice League, it just happened to star the same actress because the character is immortal. While Reeves has stated that the new film is not based on the popular Year One comic, it doesn't mean we won't see some sort of flashback story that sees another actor play a younger version of Affleck's Batman.

Matt Reeves says the new Batman movie could start shooting as early as the spring or early summer of next year, which means these questions will need to have definitive answers sooner rather than later. It looks like the Batman movie is clearly going to happen, but who will be the Batman is still an open question.

One Solo Writer Was Not Pumped About Doing The Kessel Run

One Solo Writer Was Not Pumped About Doing The Kessel Run

Warning: SPOILERS for Solo: A Star Wars Story are ahead!

In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Han Solo boasted to Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi that the Millennium Falcon was so fast that it made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. More than four decades after that movie's release, we finally saw Han pull off this feat in Solo: A Star Wars Story, as the young protagonist and company had to travel along the hyperspace route to avoid an Imperial blockade. But given that parsecs are units of measuring distance, not time, until the spinoff's release, it was never clear just what making the Kessel Run entailed. That's why, unlike his father, Solo co-writer Jon Kasdan wasn't particularly excited about showing this feat in the movie. He explained:

When he said that, I said 'Really, do we have to?' Because it's such a complicated bit of logic, and solving it was really challenging. We spent a lot of time arguing about how it could work [and how] the language of what [Han] says in that one scene shot years ago that you know George [Lucas] was just sitting there thinking, This sounds cool: 'I did it in 12 parsecs' --- could be flushed out into a fully fledged coherent sequence that was satisfying and fun. I'm thrilled with how it came out, but it was one of the daunting elements of this always.

Jon Kasdan's ambivalence towards visiting the Kessel Run was in direct contrast with co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, who was eager to explore this "essential" event in Han Solo's life. Of course, the elder Kasdan has prior experience with Han from writing The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and with Solo: A Star Wars Story being his last contribution to the Star Wars mythos, I can't fault the guy for wanting to include this event alongside other notable moments in the younger Han's life, like how he met Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, as well as why he definitely shoots first. However, despite his initial feelings, Jon Kasdan acknowledged to The Los Angeles Times that he was "thrilled" with how the Kessel Run turned out in Solo.

Not only did Solo: A Star Wars Story prove that Han Solo wasn't lying when he said he made the Kessel Run in the shortest distance to record, the event itself also revealed how the Millennium Falcon gained its distinctive look. When the ship was in Lando Calrissian's hands, not only did it look fresh and pristine, both inside and outside, but it also had an escape pod attached to the front. But by the end of the Kessel Run, the Millennium Falcon had been incredibly dinged and beaten, and Han had been forced to eject that escape pod to distract the creature attacking them, hence the reason for its forked front from that point forward.

You can read CinemaBlend's thoughts on Solo: A Star Wars Story by looking through our review and To 3D guide. Stay tuned to more updates regarding the Star Wars franchise, and if you're interested in learning what movies are coming out later this year, head to our 2018 release schedule.

One particular thing of note addressed in the movie is the famed Kessel Run. Not only do we see this important event go down, but what we come to learn the movie has changed a rather important bit
What is a Parsec? The Truth About Han Solo's Kessel Run

This means that all Han Solo had to do was take the Millennium Falcon on a shortcut to make the Kessel Run in 12-Parsecs. The Millennium Flacon's Kessel Run is all a big sham! Now I'm thinking, "Hold up a minute, how did he make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs if a parsec doesn't even measure time!
Jules Verne's influence on the Kessel Run and more fun

Kessel Run in 12 parsecs is NOT a mistake. Solo: A Star Wars Story movie has confirmed it. In the movie, while escaping planet Kessel, Han piloted the Millennium Falcon along a dangerous 12 parsecs route through an uncharted maelstrom to elude an Imperial blockade.
'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Solves The Kessel Run Problem

A popular travel route for smuggling operations, the Kessel Run went around the Maw, a cluster of black holes. Han's claim to have made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs was therefore not just a boast about his ship's speed but also a boast about his skills and daring as a pilot.
