How A Quiet Place 2 Isn't Really A Sequel At All

There's a reason Emily Blunt went from A Quiet Place to playing Mary Poppins. She is practically perfect in every way. John Krasinski directed A Quiet Place, and had no plans to return for more. And yet, he's returning for a follow-up movie due in 2020. But it was his co-star/wife who best understood his thought process for A Quiet Place 2 as a sequel that's not quite a sequel. Here's Krasinski's explanation:

It was actually Emily, of course, who articulated it better than me. She said the same thing, it was like, 'No way, don't do a second one,' and then I pitched her my idea and she was like, 'So you're definitely doing that.' She said, 'But it's not a sequel. It's the second book in a series,' she said, 'It sounds [like] semantics but it's true, it really is---you're not doing anything that's like, alright I'm gonna take all the things you love and just kinda repeat them but in a different way.' It's not A Quieter Place, it's sort of an exploration of getting to live in the circumstances, and that's really fun.

"The second book in a series" is an elegant way to describe a continuation that is not quite a sequel. There are so many terms floating around these days -- sequel, spinoff, reboot, revival, continuation, anthology, Part 2, Chapter 3, etc. -- but a book analogy does seem to elevate the conversation.

John Krasinski told his non-sequel story on The Big Picture podcast (via Collider). He also shared more of his approach to the second film, further explaining how A Quiet Place 2 will not be a classic sequel:

Why I had this little idea that's now gotten bigger is most sequels are about a villain returning or a hero returning, and you have to build this entire world around just the idea that I have a hero or a villain. That's a lot, and I think that's where a lot of sequels go wrong because as much as you love that hero or villain, the entire thing is fabricated just to make that person work. [With A Quiet Place 2], we have the world. So it's actually the world that's built, it's the idea that the rest of the world is going through this exact same experience. Are there other people that have to survive like this? It's that idea of living through the set of circumstances, not again in the same way obviously, but exploring it more. You only got to do it intimately for a small amount of time, so what happens next?

It does sound like he's planning to return to the universe of A Quiet Place, if not the characters. Sounds like more of a spinoff, or an anthology, but it's all semantics.

John Krasinski added that he was not planning to get involved in the sequel himself, and he was ready to hand off the reins to new filmmakers. But The Force essentially compelled him to return:

So I had this little idea that I thought of and my producer, again, was very smart and said, 'Will you just write it down so I can give it to these filmmakers who are coming in to pitch?' and I said, 'Yeah'. And then after like three weeks he was like, 'Why don't you just write this and then we'll get another filmmaker?' and of course Jedi mind tricked me into signing on to the sequel.

Whatever works, man! He never says the words "Yes, I will direct the next movie," but it sounds that way. It probably didn't take too much arm-twisting either. Right after A Quiet Place came out, screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods said they already had some set pieces written for a sequel.

A few months ago, John Krasinski said he had been "tinkering with an idea for a few months and it just started to percolate," and the team was happy with it.

Now they not only have a plan for the non-sequel sequel, A Quiet Place 2 already has a release date of May 15, 2020.

A Quiet Place came out in April 2018 and made $340.6 million off a reported production budget of $17 million. It was a big surprise to everyone involved. John Krasinski knew, from a practical standpoint, that Paramount would want to capitalize on that. But he gave the studio execs credit that they didn't just want to go in and pump another one out to make more money; he said they want to maintain a certain level of quality for the audience.

We'll see how the big plan turns out when A Quiet Place 2 opens in theaters on May 15, 2020. Here's what is still ahead in theaters in 2018 -- including Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins Returns -- and what we can look forward to in 2019.

Sounds Like Rocket Has A Major Role In Avengers: Endgame

Sounds Like Rocket Has A Major Role In Avengers: Endgame

There are just two movies left in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Following the unexpected ending of Avengers: Infinity War, it was clear that the Russo Brothers weren't fooling around, and are willing to kill off any and all characters to service the greater story. Thanos' victory in accruing the Infinity Stones wiped out half the galaxy, with both the surviving heroes and the audience left to watch in horror as countless characters faded to dust.

The Guardians of the Galaxy were hit especially hard from Thanos' assault, with Gamora being killed so her adopted father could get the Soul Stone, and everyone but Rocket wiped out from Thanos' snap (aka The Decimation). Sean Gunn plays Rocket via motion capture on set, and recently teased a major role for the foul mouthed Guardian in Avengers: Endgame, saying:

All I can say is that Rocket gets to meet a lot of interesting new people that he has not met before in Endgame and I think I'll leave it at that.

Bring on the crossovers. Prior to Infinity War, the Guardians of the Galaxy were kept largely separate from the rest of the MCU, due to their cosmic setting and place in the overall timeline of the shared universe. But Rocket is here in the present, and will be among the rest of the survivors once Endgame finally arrives in theaters next month.

Rocket and Groot spent much of Infinity War alongside Chris Hemsworth's Thor, as he went on a journey to get Stormbreaker. It was a great character pairing, and he and Thor will likely continue vibing during Endgame. The trio ultimately made it to the Battle of Wakanda in the nick of time, and took out Thanos' forces in quick succession. But it wasn't enough to stop the snap, and Rocket watched Groot turn to dust before his eyes. And this time, his best friend didn't come back to life.

Rocket was seen among the rest of the survivors in the Avengers: Endgame trailer, although his role and the entire movie's story are a complete mystery to the general public. But Sean Gunn's comments to IGN are sure to excite the fandom, who are hoping that the character shared by Gunn and Bradley Cooper will have plenty of screen time in the upcoming blockbuster. The surviving heroes are going to have to lean on each other if they hope to reverse Thanos' snap, and will need help in the form of Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, and Ronin.

It should be interesting to see who Rocket ends up interacting with in Endgame, especially given the character's signature attitude. He seems like the perfect foil for uptight Avengers like Captain America and Bruce Banner, as well as egos like Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Smart money says he ends up providing some much needed comedic relief to an otherwise somber movie.

Answers will come when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

A Hunger Games Prequel Is Coming, So Bring On The Movie Deals

The Hunger Games was incredibly popular young adult book series that got adapted into an incredibly popular film series. Ever since the last movie hit screens, we've heard that the possibility for more movies was being considered, and now it seems almost certain that another movie will be on the way before too long, because a new book has just been announced.

While the new novel from Suzanne Collins has no official title as yet, it is set to be released in May of next year, and according to the New York Times, it will be a prequel set 64 years before the events of the first Hunger Games novel. This will take the story to the years following the "Dark Days," the failed rebellion in the nation of Panem, which was referenced in the original trilogy of books.

Lionsgate, the studio behind the previous Hunger Games films, has not spoken publicly regarding whether or not the film rights to the book have already been secured, but there's a good chance that has already been taken care of. If not, you can bet that deal is being worked out as we speak.

Talk of a Hunger Games prequel movie has been around since before the final film, Mockingjay: Part 2, was actually released in theaters. Since the Suzanne Collins trilogy pretty effectively brought its story to an end, the only place that made sense for a new movie to go was backwards in time.

The fact that we're now seeing an actual prequel novel come out first doesn't feel like a coincidence. One certainly has to wonder if the movie studio's interest in continuing the franchise may have inspired the author to write this new book. Lionsgate did release a statement in which the studio said it had been communicating with Collins throughout the writing process and was "looking forward" to working with her on a future movie. All the more reason to assume the rights have already been sewn up.

While the final movie in the Hunger Games franchise did not perform at quite the same level as the previous films, the franchise as a whole has still been big business for Lionsgate.

The only thing that the details on the new novel would seem to indicate is that it will deal with an entirely new, or very nearly so, cast of characters. The vast majority of the characters from the Hunger Games trilogy will have yet to be born in a book that takes place more than 60 years before the books that we know. That means new heroes, new villains, and an entirely new cast of actors when the eventual movie makes it to the screen.

It's not specifically stated that the new book will be a stand alone novel, though it's also not being announced as the first of a new series. Based on the genre, it seems probably we could be getting more books, and therefore more movies, following this one, though I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.
