Netflix's Apostle Trailer Looks Creepy And Disturbing

Netflix's Apostle Trailer Looks Creepy And Disturbing

Up until now, director Gareth Evans' name has been linked with The Raid and its sprawling sequel, The Raid: Berandal. That's what happens when you reinvent a time-tested genre like the action-thriller: the world NEEDS to know what you are going to do next. For Evans, the answer is Apostle, a bloody mix of faith and fear that will reach Netflix in October. Before that, we have the first trailer, which you can watch right now:

In the press notes for Apostle, it's stated that Gareth Evans takes cues from The Wicker Man, and damn, is that ever obvious. Plunging into the sordid debate around organized religion and cult-like behavior at the turn of the century. Apostle follows mysterious stranger Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens, The Guest and Beauty and the Beast) who embarks on a journey through 1905 London to reclaim his sister, who has joined a cult. On an island off the coast, Thomas encounters the captivating leader of this organized sect, Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen), who of course has nasty motives for wanting to form this new religion.

I would belly up to Apostle if it was simply a camera pointed at Michael Sheen and Dan Stevens, in a test of wills. These two are incredible actors, and this material should be ripe for them to explore some dramatic territories.

But when you bring Gareth Evans into the fold, it elevates Apostle to a new playing field. Yes, there is a quick shot of what could be Dan Stevens in a fight sequence involving poles and sticks. When you hire the guy behind The Raid, you turn him loose. But in truth, I'm more excited to see what tricks Apostle brings to the table in a new genre: that of psychological horror. You saw this little dude, right? Because I'm going to see him again in my nightmares this evening, that much I can guarantee.

Before Apostle makes its way into people's homes via Netflix, the producers plan to swing it by Fantastic Fest in Austin, which is an ideal launch pad for a genre film like this. Expect the buzz coming out of Austin to set the tone for the reception. But the beautiful thing about Netflix is that, so long as you are a subscriber, the only thing that it will cost you -- should you decide to check it out -- is some of your time.

When can you check it out? Apostle will begin to stream on Netflix globally on October 12. Written and directed by Gareth Evans, Apostle co-stars Dan Stevens, Michael Sheen, Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Bill Milner and Paul Higgins. What do you think of the new trailer? Do you think you will check this one out?

The Dune Reboot May Have Found Its Female Lead

The Dune Reboot May Have Found Its Female Lead

Frank Herbert's Dune still ranks as one of the most important pieces of science fiction literature more than five decades after its publication, and while its 1984 theatrical adaptation wasn't met with nearly the same level of critical praise, it's since morphed into a cult classic. Now after delivering Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, director Denis Villeneuve is stepping back into the sci-fi realm to put his own spin on Dune for the big screen. Casting is currently underway, and the latest update is that Mission: Impossible - Fallout's Rebecca Ferguson is being eyed to join the main lineup of characters.

Back in July, Call Me by Your Name's Timothe Chalamet was cast in the Dune reboot as Paul Atreides, Kyle MacLachlan's role in David Lynch's Dune movie. THR has now dropped the news that Rebecca Ferguson is in negotiations to star opposite Chalamet as Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, who Francesca Annis played in the previous theatrical adaptation. We'll have to wait and see if Ferguson finalizes a deal, but with Legendary Entertainment (which acquired the Dune series film and TV rights in late 2016) working to get cameras rolling on the Dune reboot in the near future, ideally we'll find out what the situation is sooner rather than later.

Having already starred in projects like Hercules, The White Queen and The Red Tent, Rebecca Ferguson's acting career hit a new high when she appeared in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation as Ilsa Faust, whom she reprised this summer for Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Her other notable credits include Florence Foster Jenkins, The Girl on the Train, The Greatest Showman and The Snowman. Even though her involvement with Dune isn't nailed down just yet, Ferguson is keeping busy in the coming years with Doctor Sleep, The Kid Who Would Be King and the Men in Black spinoff.

Like the original source material, the Dune reboot is set far in the future and follows the Atreides family as they're forced to flee to the desert wastelands after being betrayed, leaving it up to Paul to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Lady Jessica is an especially integral character in the story, as she helps Paul convince the nomadic tribes living in the desert that he is a savior-like figure, and with their help, the Atreides family can overthrow their enemies. Along with Denis Villeneuve sitting in the director's chair, he also co-wrote the Dune reboot with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.

The Dune reboot doesn't have a set release date yet, but Legendary is hoping to get production started by early next year. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates, but in the meantime, don't forget to see what movies are hitting theaters later this year by looking through our 2018 release schedule.

Mark Hamill Went Above And Beyond To Make Chucky Special In The New Child's Play

Mark Hamill Went Above And Beyond To Make Chucky Special In The New Child's Play

Mark Hamill may be best known for his onscreen role as the heroic Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, but he is also a prolific voice actor who has voiced great villains over the years like Firelord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Batmans nemesis, the Joker, in DCs animated movies and series. Now he is lending his voice to another iconic character, this one belonging to the horror genre, Childs Plays Chucky.

CinemaBlends own Eric Eisenberg spoke with Seth Grahame-Smith, one of the producers on the upcoming reboot/remake of Childs Play in an exclusive interview, and he spoke about how Mark Hamill really went above and beyond to make his Chucky special. Seth said:

Not only was he into it, he really started wanting to talk to us a lot about it from a standpoint of creating a character, and he wanted to do it as an acting challenge. And when we showed up the first day and the first recording session, he had watched all seven of the original movies, and he had sort of written a whole series of notes about his progression through the character, and development of voice. And then he showed us some of the voices he was developing. It was insane. He really jumped into it like a serious acting challenge.

Wow, Mark Hamill was not messing around, he really approached Chucky with all the preparation that he would a live-action character and perhaps more so. Seth Grahame-Smith sounds as though he was both surprised and impressed at how Mark Hamill viewed the role as an acting challenge, and the level of homework that he put in to develop the voice for Chucky.

Even before he had recorded a single line of dialogue, Mark Hamill had already watched all of the films in the Childs Play/Chucky franchise and was working on multiple voices for his iteration of the character. All of this for a killer doll; thats what you get with a true pro voice actor like Mark Hamill.

I guess it should be unsurprising he puts this much thought into his characters given how vocal he has been about the direction of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. He isn't just reading a script, he has an idea in his head of who his characters are and what their story should be. All that hard work paid off too, as Seth Grahame-Smith continued:

And we're still actually doing the last little records right around now, and I'm star-struck every time I'm in his presence. I can't believe that I'm in a recording booth with Mark Hamill. But that goes away really quickly when he starts to do the Chucky voice and match to picture. He becomes that character. And I think that like everything we're trying to do, there's a difference, right? You're not imitating Brad [Dourif]. That would be insane, and not respectful. I think cast-wise, voice-wise, we couldn't have done better in terms of the people that we attracted to the movie.

It sounds like Mark Hamill knew that he had the unenviable task of taking on an iconic character that already has a signature voice. Mark Hamill obviously wasnt going to try and imitate Brad Dourif who has voiced Chucky in all the previous films and is the voice of Chucky to this point.

With that in mind, Mark Hamill really wanted to put his own spin on Chucky and work hard to make sure that this new Chucky was memorable and unique and that he sounded the way he does for a reason that is informed by his character.

This makes sense too considering that the Chucky in the new Childs Play isnt a doll with the spirit of a serial killer in him. This new Chucky is more a Black Mirror-esque killer A.I. that turns smart home products into tools to kill. So he should have his own unique voice and Mark Hamill took that responsibility very seriously.

We havent heard (or seen) much from Mark Hamills Chucky in the trailers so far, and they seem to be really building him up. If Seth Grahame-Smiths comments are anything to go by, the famous actor disappeared and really became Chucky for Child's Play. And given Mark Hamills track record, we have no reason to doubt that he will be a worthy torchbearer for this horror icon.

Childs Play slashes its way into theaters on June 21. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to see all the movies headed your way as we enter the summer movie season.
