The Key Advice Guillermo del Toro Gave To Pacific Rim 2's Director

Coming in to direct Pacific Rim: Uprising, writer/director Steven DeKnight had some seriously big shoes to fill. Not only was he making his feature debut with the hotly-anticipated sequel, but he was also following-up a film made by one of the industry's most talented auteurs: Guillermo del Toro. That's a whole lot of pressure for anyone to take on -- but there was a silver lining. Working on the project meant DeKnight had the chance to sit down with the Pacific Rim filmmaker, and as he recently told me in an interview, in the process he received some extremely vital advice:

I pitched [Guillermo del Toro] what I was thinking, he really liked it, he gave me some great suggestions. And one of the best words of advice he gave me was, 'Look, it's a marathon. It's a long haul. So just pace yourself, and if you ever need anything from me give me a shout. Otherwise I want to stay out of your hair. Make it your movie.' Which, to get that kind of blessing from him, was amazing. Because right as I was starting to prep, he was going off to prep The Shape of Water. And he finished that and went into post-production when I was halfway through shooting this movie. That's the reason he didn't do this movie, was because of Shape of Water -- and it worked out great for him, and it worked out great for me! Win-win!

I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with Steven DeKnight earlier this month at the Los Angeles press day for Pacific Rim: Uprising, and it was at the very start of the interview that we discussed the influence of Guillermo del Toro on his new film. It was just days after the Mexican filmmaker won both the Best Picture and Best Director Academy Awards for his work on The Shape of Water, and it was with that in mind I asked about his role in the making of the new sequel. Because of scheduling he was forced to be mostly hands off, but apparently he did find time to chat with DeKnight about his vision for the sequel, and offered some helpful suggestions to make the whole thing go as easily as possible.

Interestingly, Steven DeKnight meeting Guillermo del Toro was actually the last piece of the puzzle for him when it came to really preparing for Pacific Rim: Uprising. In the early days of the project he earned the approval of Legendary Pictures producers Mary Parent and Thomas Tull -- but he also explained to me that del Toro's approval was massively important, partially because of his own deep appreciation for his art. Said DeKnight,

Guillermo was the last person I had to get the sign off from for the movie. And he was fantastic. Anyone who has spent five minutes... what you see with Guillermo, that's exactly who Guillermo is. He's warm, he's wonderful, he's a true genius. I've been a fan since Cronos. I've gone to the theater to see every single one of his movies, own all of his DVDs, poured through the extra features, the commentary, own all of his books on the making-ofs of all his movies. So I've been a really hardcore Guillermo fan, and to just get the chance to sit down with him and talk with him was a thrill, regardless of whether or not I could direct the movie.

Click play on the video below to watch Steven DeKnight talk all about his relationship with Guillermo del Toro and the key influence and advice he provided in the making of Pacific Rim: Uprising:

Because Steven DeKnight and Guillermo del Toro are two very different filmmakers, Pacific Rim: Uprising is a change-up from the original -- and you'll soon be able to see it for yourself. After five years of waiting, the blockbuster is arriving on the big screen this Friday, March 23rd -- and be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for more from my interview with the cast and filmmakers behind the movie!

How Godzilla: King Of Monsters Is Different Than Other Movies In The Franchise

How Godzilla: King Of Monsters Is Different Than Other Movies In The Franchise

After traveling back to 1973 to tell King Kongs take in Kong: Skull Island, the MonsterVerse is jumping back to the present day this summer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Due to the events of 2014s Godzilla, the public now aware of the Titans existence, and King of the Monsters will see more of these giant beasts awakening to wreak havoc on the world. But monsters are just one half of the equation in these kaiju movies. There are also the human players directly involved, and according to King of the Monsters star Vera Farmiga, a big way this sequel distinguishes itself from its predecessors is that it places a mother/daughter relationship front and center. In Farmigas words:

The previous Godzilla really focused on the relationship of a father and a son. At the heart of our film is this relationship between a mother and daughter.

Obviously the main draw of these types of movies is to see monsters battling one another, but the human stories also help keep the narrative grounded, so to speak. In Godzilla, the relationship between Aaron Taylor-Johnsons Ford Brody and his father Joe, played by Bryan Cranston, was explored during the first half of the movie, and for the sequel, we get to see Vera Farmigas Dr. Emma Russell interacting with her daughter Madison, played by Millie Bobby Brown. Emmas ex-husband and Madisons father, Kyle Chandlers Dr. Mark Russell, will also appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but as Farmiga told Syfy Wire, its Emma and Madisons relationship will get a lot of attention.

Godzilla didnt have much time to focus on Ford and Joe Brodys dynamic since Joe died after the awakening of the first MUTO, but it doesnt look like Godzilla: King of the Monsters will repeat that formula. The sequel sees Emma and Madison Russell being kidnapped by a mysterious organization, presumably due to Emmas work on communicating with and possibly controlling the Titans. Strangely, though, the first King of the Monsters trailer framed Emma as a seemingly willing participant in whatever this group has planned, and both Madison and Mark expressing disappointment and disgust at her actions, although admittedly, it could just look that way thanks to how the preview was edited.

Either way, Emma and Madison will be among the main human characters getting the spotlight in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and since the previous MonsterVerse movies, let alone most monsters movies, dont highlighted mother/daughter relationships, this makes for a nice change of pace. That said, while both Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler are confirmed to appear in Godzilla vs. Kong, Vera Farmiga has not been announced as part of that cast. Its possible that Farmigas involvement either hasnt been cemented or shell have a smaller role in the fourth MonsterVerse entry, but perhaps, just like how Ford Brody lost his father, Madison will lose her mother during King of the Monsters. Thatd be tragic, but in the MonsterVerse, tragedy comes in large supply.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters rampages into theaters on May 31, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. Dont forget to look through our 2019 release schedule to learn what other movies are coming out this year.

Zombieland: Double Tap, An Updated Cast List

Zombieland: Double Tap, An Updated Cast List

Its been almost a full decade since Ruben Fleischers Zombieland first surprised the hell out of us, becoming one of the best horror comedies in recent memory and a box office smash. Because of this success, the last 10 years have seen incessant calls for a sequel, but both the filmmakers and stars have been busy with other huge endeavors. Now, however, the wait for the follow-up is almost over, as Zombieland: Double Tap is in the works and preparing to make its way to a theater near you this year.

The Zombieland sequel is currently on track to hit its October 2, 2019 release date, with Ruben Fleischer back in the directors chair, and Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick once again penning the script. We have not heard a great deal about whats going on in regards to the plot, but one thing we do know is that the cast is totally stacked. Not only are the principal stars of the first movie coming back, but they will be joined by a number of other great talents in Zombieland: Double Tap. So without further ado, lets take a look at who is on-board so far:

Jesse EisenbergThe first Zombieland introduced us to Columbus as a nebbish-y, loner college student with a serious fear of clowns, but his journey through the story opened him up in a big way and he became a great deal more brave and adventurous. Of course, he still has his rules to live by, and presumably theyve helped him survive in the last 10 years.

For Jesse Eisenberg, Zombieland notably debuted almost exactly a year before The Social Network, which was a performance that earned him his first Academy Award nomination. In that time he has also starred in three franchises - Rio, Now You See Me, and the DC Extended Universe - and has continued his work in a significant number of impressive independent films.

Emma StoneSpeaking of Academy Awards, Emma Stone has also had a great deal of Oscar success in the time since Zombieland, not only being nominated for her turn in Birdman, but winning the Best Actress prize for La La Land. She is actually up for another statute this year thanks to her amazing The Favourite performance, and since 2009 has unquestionably has become one of the brightest stars in Hollywood.

She will reprise her role as Wichita in Zombieland: Double Tap bringing back the character who was notably an at-all-costs survivor. The friends she made in the first movie did a lot to soften her edges we even learned her first name is Krista but well have to wait and see what consequences rise from the stakes of the sequel.

Woody HarrelsonWoody Harrelson was the notable veteran of the first Zombieland principal cast, but he kicked more ass than all of them put together. Tallahassee is a man who is very at home in the zombie apocalypse (minus the lack of Twinkies), as he has a lot of rage to get out, and does so by killing the undead by any means necessary. We know he has a tragic backstory involving the loss of a son, but finding a new family by the end of the first movie seemed to fill the void in him.

Harrelson just recently worked with Ruben Fleischer again, appearing in the post-credits scene of Venom as serial killer Cletus Kasady, but has also been quite ubiquitous in recent years. He earned a great deal of praise for his part opposite Matthew McConaughey in HBOs True Detective, but has also been making huge movies like War For The Planet Of The Apes, Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Hunger Games and the Now You See Me features with Jesse Eisenberg. He also just earned his third Academy Award nomination last year for his work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, so, all in all, hes in a really great place.

Abigail BreslinAbigail Breslin will long be remembered for her wonderful breakout performance as the diminutive Olive Hoover in 2006's Little Miss Sunshine (a part that earned her first Oscar nod) - but the first Zombieland was one of her most mature roles, and she has continued growing as an actress with a lot of film and television work in the last 10 years. In addition to features like August: Osage County and Final Girl, she's also been active on the small screen with a season of Scream Queens.

As for her part in Zombieland: Double Tap, its worth noting that Little Rock was only 12 when we last saw her so it will be interesting to see the results of maturity through the zombie apocalypse. She could always look after herself, but presumably now shell be extra equipped to do so, with extra skills learned over the years.

Rosario DawsonWhile we know absolutely nothing about the plot of Zombieland: Double Tap, we do know that the main cast has grown, with one of the new additions being Rosario Dawson. The actress doesnt have a great deal of horror experience with Quentin Tarantinos Death Proof being the standout title but she has proven comedy chops, so hopefully shell get a lot of opportunity to make us laugh in the upcoming movie.

Zoey DeutchZoey Deutch was one of the first new additions to Zombieland: Double Tap, having signed on to star in the movie in November 2018, though sadly the time since then has not provided any insight to what her role will be in the film. The daughter of actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch, the actress is probably still be described as an up-and-comer, though she has been in some notable movies like Richard Linklanter's Everybody Wants Some!! and James Franco's The Disaster Artist. In addition to her work on the Zombieland sequel, she also has a part in Ryan Murphy's new series The Politician.

Thomas MiddleditchThomas Middleditch is certainly better known for his TV work, being the star of the beloved HBO series Silicon Valley, but he's set to have a big year in cinemas in 2019. It starts in the summer with his part in Mike Dougherty's monster blockbuster Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, but he'll follow that up in the fall with a role in Zombieland: Double Tap. We dont know who he will be playing (following the pattern here?), but we will definitely update this article as we learn more.

Luke WilsonLuke Wilson has had a long acting career, with highlights in both film and TV. While it's currently unknown what role he'll be playing in Zombieland's highly anticipated sequel, he's got the resume to warrant his inclusion in the comedy/horror film. His comedic chops are what Wilson is known best for, with roles in Legally Blonde, The Ridiculous Six, and Old School. But he's also had some work that lends itself more to the dramatic, so he's a solid casting choice to bring into Zombieland: Double Tap.

Who would you like to see join the cast of Zombieland: Double Tap? Hit the comments section below with your thoughts and suggestions, and come back periodically to see who else will be joining the new horror-comedy!
