Why Jonah Hill Didnt Get To Appear In The Social Network

Jonah Hill made his name as a comedic actor, but the role that got away could have been his breakout dramatic appearance. Today Jonah Hill is a multiple time Academy Award nominee but there was a time when he wasn't known for making those sorts of films. His breakout his serious drama was probably 2011's Moneyball but it could have been a year earlier, as it turns out he was very nearly in David Fincher's The Social Network, but the director didn't want him. According to Hill...

Low-key, David Fincher, or high-key, David Fincher didn't want me in Social Network. It was between me and Justin Timberlake for that part... Obviously [Fincher's] the man, but he was not having me. The studio wanted me, I think, and then Justin Timberlake was amazing in it.

It seems that while there were some people interested in having Jonah Hill play Napster founder Sean Parker in The Social Network, director David Fincher was sold on getting Justin Timberlake in the role.

Jonah Hill says he has several other stories about roles he didn't get, though he doesn't go into too much detail on the others while appearing on The Bill Simmons Podcast. He only mentions that he was passed over for this particular role. Hill makes it clear he doesn't hold anything against the director for not casting him in the movie, saying he's only met Fincher once and the director was nothing but nice.

While Jonah Hill's career certainly didn't suffer for not getting the Social Network, as he would go on to make Moneyball and be nominated for an Oscar, he does admit that, of all the roles that he lost out on, that movie is the one that he still really wishes had worked out.

Social Network is the one that I was actually like years later was like, 'Fuck, like I'm so bummed.'

The reason that Jonah Hill appears to be so bummed about not getting the role is that he absolutely loves the movie. He says it's a movie he could watch and enjoy on a loop. He thinks Justin Timberlake did great with the performance that could have been his and he especially calls out the Oscar-winning score for the movie, which he mentions influenced how he wanted the music to be handled in his own directorial debut, Mid90s.

We almost certainly would have had a very different version of Sean Parker had Jonah Hill ended up in the role instead of Justin Timberlake. Still, knowing now how great Jonah Hill is, I would love to have seen what he would have done with such a part. You can see Jonah Hill's Mid90s in theaters now.

MoviePass Has Plenty Of Feelings About AMC's New Competing Pass

MoviePass and AMC Theaters have had more than a friendly rivalry over the past several months. While the former has seen huge subscriber growth with its new model, the latter has stated over time that the MoviePass way of doing things is not the right model, and both have been open about their feelings regarding each other. Now, AMC has announced that it is going to also create a service in a similar vein to that of MoviePass. Because of this, the subscription service has responded to the theater chain's new plans, expressing its thoughts on the matter. Per MoviePass:

MoviePass has touted a few different payment plans and options over the past several months. Regardless, the basic MoviePass plan costs $9.95 a month and offers users the option to see one movie a day, although recently a new rule was added where flicks can't be repeated. AMC's plan, on the other hand is an advanced addition to its Stubs Rewards program. Stubs A-List will cost $19.95 a month and can only be used at AMC Theaters, but it will also allow users to pre-order tickets, see the same movie multiple times and earn other benefits, like snack upgrades.

On Twitter, the service stated it has hopes that theaters will work with the MoviePass model down the line and will allow e-ticketing options so people don't have to physically head to the theater to use their MoviePass cards. Per the service:

AMC has repeatedly disparaged our model as a way to discourage our growth because all along they wanted to launch their own, more expensive plan. We want to make movies more accessible, they want more profit. E-ticketing is the way we're going to do that, some theaters already have this activated. We're working to on board as many partners as we can for this. You can help us by encouraging your local theaters to join our partner program.

Still, for now, AMC can one-up that e-ticketing model, although MoviePass clearly still has a leg up on price point and options in terms of where you want to see a movie. In addition, MoviePass recently announced a family plan is going to be introduced in short order, which should give people with families or partners more flexibility. There are other competitors in the market, as well, including Sinemia and Cinemark's Movie Club, and all have pros and cons, depending on the theaters you frequent and your general needs. For now, though, we're moving into a new era of movie-watching. It'll be interesting to see how different companies compete in the space, and see which plans end up enticing new customers and being viable over the long haul. It's an exciting time to be going to the movies, for sure.
