Dave Bautista Explains Why He Defended James Gunn When It Could Have Affected His Career

Its been months and months since news broke in July that James Gunn would no longer be directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after some old but insensitive tweets he had thrown out into the universe were unearthed. In that time Dave Bautista has been a staunch defender of the director, claiming he should have been given back the franchise.

He recently spoke out about why he ultimately decided he needed to defend James Gunn over and over again online and to the press, noting that he felt it was the right thing to do.

It was draining. But if I'm not the guy who defends my friends, who am I?

During his full interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Dave Bautista did open up about being aware that his decision to publicly defend director James Gunn could have an effect on the types of opportunities he is asked to get involved with in the future, but he also said that he would prefer to be the person he is rather than to play some sort of game to earn more money. Or, as the actor himself put it:

That's just never going to be me, and that goes back to the feeling that I only need so much. I only need a certain level of security. I don't need to make $20 million a film. I don't even want $20 million a film. I wouldn't know what to do with it.

The good news?

In the time since James Gunn was initially let go from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, all parties have seemingly moved on. James Gunn is set to direct The Suicide Squad, a re-envisioned take on what we got with Suicide Squad back in 2016.

Disney is still moving forward with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and has confirmed to CinemaBlend that James Gunns script will be still be used for the upcoming three-quel. While Dave Bautista hasnt officially said whether or not Drax will be back in the fold, we still have to wait and see how Avengers: Endgame pans out before we can even start worrying about that too much.

At the end of the day, Dave Bautista made it clear that he didnt think James Gunn should be heavily punished for jokes he made in the past. He spoke out again and again on the matter and has even said he would like a role in The Suicide Squad when it starts filming.

In fact, the major members of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast wrote a letter in support of James Gunn. However, time passes and it is often difficult to undo a decision once a decision has been made. In this case, Disney's decision stood. We'll have to wait and see what that ends up meaning for both the Marvel and DC movie universes.

Expectations for Infinity War's performance were already sky-high, but that number is actually higher than the $250 million estimate from yesterday. With those numbers locked in place, Avengers: Infinity War has officially experienced the best opening weekend of all time -- overtaking the blockbuster debuts of movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Jurassic World in the process.

An easy way to put this box office figure into perspective is to compare it to another recent superhero outing. Specifically, Avengers: Infinity War has handily overtaken Justice League, grossing more at the domestic box office in one weekend than the first-ever DCEU team-up film grossed in its entire domestic box office run. As of right now, Avengers: Infinity War is sitting with $641 million globally (with more international premieres in places like China still to come), and it's in a position to keep toppling records as it continues its rollout.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons as to why Avengers: Infinity War has experienced such a strong opening weekend. As the culmination of a ten-year story, there was already quite a bit of anticipation to see what would happen when Thanos showed up on Earth. Moreover, the film's marketing (not to mention comments made by Marvel insiders) promised a story full of shocking moments, so it's reasonable to assume that fans came out in full force so that they could make sure they were part of the first wave of viewers to see the movie, unspoiled. In the music world, streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music have shown that there's an appetite for monthly fees offering nearly unlimited access to tracks and artists. With that in mind, MoviePass is getting in on the action by bundling access to iHeartRadio's premium music streaming platform. At the cost of $29.95 for three months, the subscription will allow users to see four 2-D movies per month (or one movie per week) and maintain access to a vast library of songs and music playlists.

This offer isn't the first time that MoviePass has bundled access to other media into its subscriptions. In addition to this THR report of access to iHeartRadio music streaming, MoviePass similarly offered users limited-time access to Fandor's movie streaming platform upon signing up for the service.

All of these seems to feed into the fact that MoviePass has made some notable moves in recent months, and its overall goals seem relatively lofty. In fact, the company recently stated that it plans to ensure that its subscriber count more than doubles from 2 million users to 5 million users by the end of the year. Between offering access to these other accounts and consistently reducing its prices, the service keeps attempting to find new ways to galvanize subscriptions and convince people that it's the right financial play.

Of course, while many of these new business models and technologies have become useful to consumers, MoviePass has also made waves and caused quite a bit of controversy as well. MoviePass has come into direct conflict with some theater chains (notably AMC) that don't feel entirely optimistic about how the low pricing could affect exhibitors, and the company has also had to contend with some PR issues relating to customer service problems. However, as MoviePass continues to expand into new areas of entertainment, there's no telling how it will continue to evolve its business model to meet consumer demands.
